SAYREVILLE, NEW JERSEY: A New Jersey councilwoman was reportedly shot and killed outside her home, with officials saying she was the 'intended target'. Eunice Dwumfour, 30, was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds in her white Nissan SUV after it crashed near the Camelot at La Mer apartment complex in Sayreville on Wednesday, February 01.
The local police arrived at the scene at around 7:30 pm after receiving a 911 call for several shots fired on Samuel Circle in Sayreville. Upon their arrival, they found Dwumfor’s severely wounded body. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses revealed that the suspected gunman was seen racing off to the Garden State Parkway, which edges the complex, according to NY Post. The Sayreville police and Middlesex County officials have launched an investigation into the shooting but no details have been released.

Sayreville Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick described Dwumfour as a "dedicated member of our Borough Council who was truly committed to serve all of our residents" and called the shooting a "despicable criminal act."
"This is an active and ongoing investigation anyone with information or surveillance footage of the area is asked to call Detective Rebecca Morales of the Sayreville Police Department at 732-727-4444 or Detective Michelle Coppola of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office 732-745-3477," the prosecutor's office said.
Authorities currently believe that Dwumfor, who worked for a Nigerian-based church group, was the intended target of the shooting. Her damaged SUV was seen being towed away by the authorities in the early hours of Thursday morning. The shocking death of the Republican councilwoman has sent a shockwave through the close-knit town of Sayreville.

Who was Eunice Dwumfour?
Dwumfour was a Certified Business Analyst, who also worked for Scrum Professional for Fire Congress Fellowship Inc. As per her LinkedIn page, she was also a part-time EMT. Before her council role, she served as a Director of Churches for the Nigerian-based Champions Royal Assembly. She garnered a bachelor’s degree in Women’s Studies from William Paterson University. Dwumfour had served the Borough of Sayreville since November 2021, when she ousted the sitting Democrat in a shock election win. She was not up for reelection until 2024.

Close family and friends of the councilwoman remembered her as an 'amazing friend' who 'loved god'. A joint Facebook page for Detective Juan Rodriguez and Pastor Doctor Nelia Rodriguez mourned her death saying, "I just saw her this morning at the store. I remember saying to her I'll see you at the HRC meeting tomorrow not knowing tonight was going to be the end of her life. I can't stop crying. She was 30 years young and full of life. You will be missed my dear, precious friend."

Community organizer Charlie Kratovil also shared his grief and called Dwumfour’s death “a huge loss for the Sayreville community.” “I personally knew her to be a very kind person and public servant. May she rest in peace,” he wrote while sharing a video of her car being towed.
