COLESVILLE, NEW YORK: A New York man allegedly wanted to harm his wife but ended up killing his daughter. Patrick D Proefriedt is facing second-degree murder, attempted murder, and first-degree criminal contempt for violating an order of protection charges after the death of Eleanor M Carey.
The three-week-old child was with her mother when the 26-year-old man allegedly shot a crossbow with the aim of hurting his wife. But the arrow, instead, fatally struck the newborn in her upper torso before hitting the 31-year-old woman in the chest, USA Today reported.

Megan Carey is the wife of Proefriedt, who allegedly murdered his daughter as well as wounded his wife on Monday, June 26, after getting into an argument with her. As per the suspect’s Facebook page, the two have been married since August 2018. Reports have said that after the attack, Carey was rushed to Wilson Hospital, where she received treatment.
However, as per the Daily Mail, Proefriedt had first tried to stop Carey from calling authorities for help. He also escaped on a 2016 Dodge Ram pickup truck from his house on State Route 41 near Cass Road after allegedly committing the crime. But he was arrested soon by the cops. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office reportedly said, “Proefriedt had a history of domestic incidents with the victim and an active Stay Away Order of Protection in place.”
‘He never, ever sees the light of day again’
Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar also reportedly stated, “He is a repugnant human being. I'm glad, as I stand here, I don't have to wonder or worry about where Mr Proefriedt is. He's exactly where he belongs, in the confines of this correctional facility. And it is my deepest desire on Eleanor's behalf that he never ever sees the light of day again.”
He added, “This is one of the most heartbreaking and senseless crimes committed in this community in recent memory. Our thoughts are with the family of this innocent 3-week-old girl, Eleanor Carey. I commend the quick and decisive action of our Law Enforcement division in responding to this tragedy and ensuring Mr Proefriedt did not escape justice. It’s just a tragic case. It’s a senseless case. Reminder to all of us standing here today that domestic violence is incredibly real.”
Besides, people on the internet have wished hell for Proefriedt with one writing on Facebook, “I hope they put you in Gen pop and you get what's coming.” Another user commented, “Do humanity a favor and the baby you never deserved to have and do what cowards like you do in jail when they’ve done something like this.”
“The sad part about this, is he's probably going to be put in protective custody rather than gen pop due to the severity and nature of his crime. Honestly wish they would just put the dude on a stake. He doesn't deserve to live after what he did,” the third user added.
