Who is Michael Mulgrew? NJ man charged with double murder of his elderly parents
BARNEGAT, NEW JERSEY: Prosecutors say a New Jersey man fatally stabbed his elderly parents, leaving behind a disturbing scene that included blood stains on the front door.
The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office announced Thursday that suspect Michael Mulgrew, 34, was apprehended outside the family's Lincoln Avenue home in Barnegat Township. He is accused of murdering his mother, Cheryl Mulgrew, 69, and father, Eugene Mulgrew, 71.
How did officials apprehend Michael?
Officers from the Barnegat Township Police Department were dispatched to the Lincoln Avenue residence to aid medical personnel on November 2.
Officers arrived at 11 am and noticed a male walking away. They observed blood stains on the front door, and as they entered the house, they discovered considerably more blood in various places.
According to officials, the deceased bodies of two victims were located in the bedroom with apparent stab wounds to their upper torsos. They were later identified as Eugene and Cheryl Mulgrew.
Officers also discovered a knife in the vicinity of the bedroom.
Michael's escape was thwarted when Barnegat Township cops saw him along West Bay Boulevard and Gunning River Road, according to authorities, and he was apprehended without incident.
What’s to come for Michael Mulgrew?
Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D Billhimer and Barnegat Township Police Chief Keith A Germain released new information regarding the double murder on Thursday evening.
An incident report filed by the Township police on Thursday stated that Michael Mulgrew may be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and other mental health conditions.
However, it was not mentioned in the report whether he was receiving any treatment for these conditions. Additionally, the report also noted that Mulgrew has a history of chronic unemployment.
Michael Mulgrew, 34, of Barnegat, was charged on Friday, November 3, with two counts of Murder, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon in connection with the stabbing murders of his parents, Eugene Mulgrew, 71, and Cheryl Mulgrew, 69, both of Barnegat.
Mulgrew was arrested and sent to the Ocean County Jail, where he is currently being held until a detention hearing.
