Who is Matthew Brenneman? Minnesota man charged with murder after his ex-GF is found dead wrapped in blankets
HENNEPIN, MINNESOTA: Matthew Brenneman, 39, a Minnesota man was charged on August 23, with two counts of second-degree murder for allegedly killing his ex-girlfriend, Danicka Bergeson, 33, in July.
Bergeson from Edina, Minnesota was a former US Army medic who was found dead in her apartment in Hopkins, Minnesota, wrapped in blankets and a comforter.
Why was Matthew Brenneman released from jail?
Brenneman, who drank bleach in an apparent suicide attempt, was also in the apartment and had written a note confessing to the crime and expressing his love for Bergeson, as reported by Star Tribune.
Bergeson had a history of being abused by Brenneman who had pleaded guilty to two domestic assault charges involving her in June 2023.
He had punched, bitten, choked, and threatened to kill her at their home during several instances in April and May.
He was released from jail on June 27, under the condition that he would not contact Bergeson. However, he violated the no-contact order and went near her apartment two days later.
Bergeson was allegedly killed sometime between June 29 and July 8.
What are the charges against Matthew Brenneman?
A judge set Brenneman's bail at $1.5 million, but he is held without bail pending the sentencing on the domestic abuse cases.
Bergeson’s father, David, told the publication that his daughter had a “very kind heart” and wanted to “fix people,” but ended up being exploited by Brenneman.
He also criticized the authorities for not imposing any “binding consequence” on Brenneman for his previous attacks.
Was Bergeson adopted?
Bergeson was adopted by David when she was nine years old after being in foster care for most of her life.
She had a “traumatic upbringing” but excelled in academics, sports and music.
She joined the US Army and became a medic before returning to complete her degree in animal science and working at a veterinary clinic.
She had to quit her job due to a back injury she suffered during her service. “This guy was just a danger. There was a history there,” David said.
“She had a real zest for life. She had all the gifts that you’re proud of as a parent,” David continued.
Danicka Bergeson had an 'unwavering commitment' and 'remarkable accomplishments'
Bergeson’s obituary described her as having an “unwavering commitment to serving others and her remarkable accomplishments.”
It also said that she “leaves behind a legacy of service, strength, and resilience.”
“Her memory will forever be cherished by her family, friends, and loved ones. May she rest in peace, knowing that her impact on the world will continue to inspire others for generations to come,” the obituary read.
A celebration of Bergeson’s life was held on July 23. In lieu of flowers, the family asked for donations to Alexandra House, a domestic violence shelter.
A GoFundMe page was also set up for "financial assistance for Danicka's family."
