SOUTH BURLINGTON, VERMONT: Logan Clegg, a New Hampshire man has been found guilty of murdering a retired couple while they were out for a walk.
A jury convicted the 27-year-old man who was living in a tent in the woods on Monday, October 23, for murdering Djeswende 'Wendy' Reid, 66, and her husband Stephen Reid, 67, on a local hiking trail.
What are the charges against Logan Clegg?
Clegg faces one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, four counts of second-degree murder, and four counts of falsifying physical evidence in the deaths of the couple on April 18, 2022, reports People.
In a joint statement issued by Concord Police Chief Bradley Osgood and Attorney General John Formella, they wrote that Clegg was found guilty of both "knowingly and recklessly causing the deaths" under "circumstances manifesting an extreme indifference to the value of human life by shooting them with a gun."
NBC Boston reported that the couple who retired recently retired had done international development work.
Murdered couple was 'avid outdoors people'
The Concord Police Department stated that a relative of the couple reported them missing when Stephen did not show up for an event conducted two days before their disappearance was reported.
The couple was last seen by their family on Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022, and the last communication with them was on April 18, 2022.
"They are avid outdoors people and are known to take frequent walks along the trails near their Concord residence," authorities stated at the time.
"Their absence and lack of communication with family-friends are uncharacteristic, and their disappearance is of significant concern," authorities added.
A few days later, the couple's bodies were discovered in the woods and were found covered with leaves and sticks. According to police, Djeswende and Stephen were shot multiple times.
Logan Clegg erased information from his computer before his arrest
Clegg gave authorities a different name when he was questioned. According to prosecutors, the convicted murderer erased information on his computer and burned his tent.
Following his arrest in South Burlington, Vermont, Clegg was found with a gun in his backpack, a fake passport, and a one-way ticket to Berlin, Germany.
Murdered couple was described by family as 'lifelong humanitarians'
Djeswende and Stephen's family shared that they feel relieved following Clegg's conviction.
"A liar, a thief, a murderer has been brought to justice today," said the couple's son, Brian Reid, NBC Boston reports.
"There's no doubt in my mind that defendant would have killed again and again and again until he was stopped," Reid added.
Speaking to NBC Boston, the victim's daughter-in-law Jackie Reid said, "Lifelong humanitarians, beloved worldwide. May Steve and Wendy rest in peace."
