The exact time of Mbitu's death remains undisclosed, but law enforcement indicated that Kangethe purchased plane tickets to Kenya during the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The scene was described as deeply disturbing, with Mbitu exhibiting massive slash wounds to her face and neck, alongside puncture wounds on her sides. Law enforcement officers noted "obvious signs of death" as "they observed a large amount of blood inside the vehicle," the New York Post reported.
Further, State police have obtained a warrant for the arrest of Kangethe, the boyfriend of the victim, as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Surveillance footage captured him driving into the Logan Airport parking garage, proceeding to the terminal area, and subsequently checking in for a flight to Kenya, as documented in the warrant.
Authorities are collaborating with Kenyan officials in efforts to apprehend Kangethe and bring him back to face the pending legal proceedings.
What were the circumstances surrounding Margaret Mbitu's disappearance?
The timeline leading up to the grim discovery of Mbitu's death revealed that she had last been seen around 11 pm on a Monday, leaving her job at the nonprofit organization BAMSI in Halifax, located approximately 30 miles southeast of Boston.
Her sudden disappearance prompted concerns, and a missing person poster was issued. The poster described the outfit she was last seen in to be black pants along with a gray shirt and a black cardigan. She left her workplace in a white Toyota Venza.
Friends and family remembered Mbitu as a kind and charismatic individual who worked as a per diem nurse, often alongside her mother in her caregiving profession. The tragedy has reverberated through the community, and BAMSI issued a statement expressing their profound grief over the loss of a remarkable young woman.
They described her as "warm, caring, and loved by everyone she worked with, both staff and the people she cared for in our group homes." The executive VP of the agency, Ulea Grace Lago further said, “As an agency, we are in mourning over the loss of such an amazing young woman.”
