RESTON, VIRGINIA: In a shocking and perplexing case, 23-year-old Juliana Peres Magalhaes, an au pair from Reston, Virginia, has found herself at the center of a gruesome double homicide investigation.

This dark tale unfolded in the early hours of February 24, when Peres Magalhaes dialed 911 twice, seeking help for a horrifying crime scene at the residence where she worked.

Now, after an extensive seven-month investigation and a puzzling confession, the Fairfax County police have implicated her in one of the murders, as per The Daily Beast.

Juliana Peres Magalhaes charged with second-degree murder

Peres Magalhaes has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of 39-year-old Joseph Ryan, who did not reside in the Bandfield family's Herndon home where the murders transpired. However, the police find no signs of forced entry, adding an eerie twist to the case.

The victims also included 37-year-old Christine Ann Banfield, the mother who employed Peres Magalhaes, and their four-year-old daughter, who was thankfully unharmed.

The morning of the murders, both Peres Magalhaes and Banfield's husband made frantic 911 calls. Initially, Banfield's husband reported that he had shot Ryan and accused him of stabbing his wife. It was a chilling scene that left investigators and the community shocked.

Juliana Peres Magalhaes remains in detention without bond

Peres Magalhaes, who also faces a felony use of a firearm charge, remains in custody at the Adult Detention Center without bond. Her criminal history in Virginia had previously consisted of only two misdemeanor driving charges. Notably, Banfield's husband and her defense lawyer have not provided immediate comments on the arrest.

The arrest marks the latest development in a harrowing seven-month-long investigation, centered around a tranquil residential Virginia neighborhood. The unsettling series of events began when Peres Magalhaes called 911 and then abruptly hung up.

Police officers responded, arriving at the crime scene around 8 am. Approximately 13 minutes later, both Peres Magalhaes and Banfield's husband were on the line with authorities.

Peres Magalhaes initially informed the authorities that her "friend was hurt," before Banfield's husband took over the conversation, explaining that he had shot an unknown man who had entered their home and attacked his wife. When officers arrived at the scene, they encountered a horrifying sight.

Ryan laid dead with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body, while Banfield had sustained stab wounds and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was tragically pronounced dead.

Importantly, there was no evidence of forced entry, ruling out the possibility of a home invasion, as clarified by Fairfax Police Chief Kevin Davis in February. The motive behind Ryan's presence in the home remains unclear, but authorities have suggested that he was not necessarily a stranger.

In the wake of these gruesome events, investigators have been secretive about crucial details. The decision to charge Peres Magalhaes with second-degree murder came after numerous interviews and a thorough examination of forensic evidence, although authorities have not yet disclosed the specific reasons behind this accusation.

The investigation into Banfield's fatal stabbing, however, remains ongoing.

First Lt. Erin Weeks provided insight into the ongoing investigation, stating, "We have recovered all weapons, and we've identified all persons involved in this case. We are keeping options open… Our big thing is continuing to interview people, continuing to review all digital and forensic evidence and learn how Christine Banfield was fatally stabbed."
