Disney+'s 'Wonder Man' sets itself apart by focusing on Simon Williams, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Williams is blessed with abilities most people would kill for, and yet, he's more interested in nailing auditions than saving the world. He wants to be taken seriously as an actor. That alone already makes him an odd fit for the Marvel machine, and the show knows it. Then there is Sir Ben Kingsley's Trevor Slattery, the former actor who once managed to make the entire world believe that he was a terrifying terrorist called the Mandarin. Trevor is still Trevor, theatrical, strangely charming, and now chasing another shot at fame alongside Williams.

They are planning to get roles in a revival of the old 'Wonder Man' movie that Simon loved when he was a kid. Of course, things are never that simple. As the first episode continues, it is revealed that the people involved are not all completely truthful. Instead of giving answers, the show gives clues and allows the doubt to stay as the characters chase dreams that might not be theirs to keep. Then, just before the credits roll, the tone changes. A simple message appears on screen. "In memory of Juan 'Spike' Osorio." No explanation. Just a name. For many viewers, it raises questions that have nothing to do with superpowers or studio politics.

Who was he? And why does 'Wonder Man' pause to honor him? Juan "Spike" Osorio wasn't an actor or a writer, and he never appeared on screen. He worked behind the scenes. Osorio was a lighting technician, part of the electrical department, as reported by Radio Times. Before his involvement in 'Wonder Man', Osorio already had a great career in the film and television industry. His credits included projects like 'The Dark Tower', 'American Born Chinese', and 'Ant-Man and the Wasp', along with shows such as 'Mayans M.C.' and 'The Conners'. According to fellow crew members, Osorio's life before Hollywood was just as fierce. He previously served in the military.

Rigging Gaffer Dave McGrory shared with The Daily Beast that Osorio survived an IED explosion while deployed in the Middle East. He was also injured during a firefight in Afghanistan, struck by shrapnel that left a scar beneath his left eye. While working on 'Wonder Man', Osorio suffered a fatal accident at Stage 3 of the Radford Studio Center in Studio City, as reported by Variety. He fell through a catwalk and died the same day, February 6, 2024. He was 41 years old. He left behind his wife, Joanne Osorio-Wu, who works as a boom operator in the industry, and his mother, Zoila Osorio.

Investigations followed. A Cal/OSHA report later determined that the section of catwalk Osorio fell through was compromised, with deteriorated wood that had been improperly secured to a roof support. The findings resulted in fines for both Disney ($36,000) and the Radford Studio Center ($45,000). Moreover, Osorio's widow and mother filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Radford Studio Center. They alleged that the facility failed to maintain and properly inspect the space. Their legal team argued that the danger could have been prevented. But Radford's attorneys pushed back, disputing responsibility. The studio suggested the incident may have involved crew members' negligence.
