Who is Derek Lobo? Man held without bail after being accused of dragging cop with car in Massachusetts
BROCKTON, MASSACHUSETTS: Derek Lobo, 31, was tracked down and taken into custody in Brockton on Thursday morning, September 14, after a dashcam captured a horrifying incident during a routine traffic stop in Massachusetts.
A state trooper found himself in a perilous situation as he was dragged approximately 30 feet by a Mercedes-Benz CLS550 while attempting to apprehend the suspect who tried to flee.
Suspect captured following terrifying incident
The incident occurred after officers pulled over Lobo for unspecified violations around 6 pm Wednesday on Montello Street. The dashcam video shows one trooper leaning into the car and engaging in conversation with the driver.
"The defendant put his vehicle in drive, pressed heavy on the acceleration, which sent the vehicle forward while the trooper remained in the vehicle," a prosecutor said in court.
"The defendant accelerated at a high rate of speed. The trooper was hanging partially out of the vehicle as the vehicle swerved into oncoming traffic. The trooper was partially dragged outside the vehicle for approximately one city block," the prosecutor added.
However, within nine seconds of the 30-second clip, the trooper's partner realizes that the suspect is attempting to make a getaway. In a desperate attempt to prevent the escape, the partner tries to pull the trooper out of the car.
Trooper's determination and suspect's arrest
Despite the partner's efforts, the trooper clings to the car, determined to stay with it as it accelerates away.
However, the officer is forced to release his grip and falls onto the road, placing himself in the path of oncoming traffic.
Fortunately, he sustains only minor injuries and quickly returns to his cruiser as both officers commence their pursuit of Lobo.
It is worth noting that the trooper who was dragged in the video is the same officer who later placed Lobo under arrest, according to mspnews.com.
Lobo now faces several charges, including assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and Fentanyl trafficking.
Following a court appearance at Brockton District Court, he was held on $5,000 bail and is currently detained at the Bristol County House of Correction.
Remarkably, on Lobo's Facebook page, where he goes by the alias DC Corleone, he has shared images of himself in the vicinity of luxury cars, including a BMW and a Ferrari. The page also features photos of a child dressed in luxury clothing, such as Gucci and Balenciaga.
