PERSON COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA: A North Carolina man is facing murder charges after he allegedly shot and killed a driver who ran over his teenage son on Monday, August 14.
The father also stole the driver’s truck and drove to his home along with his wife, leaving his son’s body on the road, authorities said as per reports.
Who is Chad Woods?
Chad Woods, 41, father of the 17-year-old boy who was killed by driver Jeffrey McKay, 39, is accused of shooting and killing the latter and stealing his truck.
He is facing charges of second-degree murder and larceny of a motor vehicle as reported by Wral.
The tragic incident occurred around 6 am on Dink Ashley Road in Timberlake, North Carolina, about 21 miles north of Durham.
Woods, his wife and his son, whose name has not been released, were walking after their car ran out of gas.
McKay was driving a department truck when he hit the 17-year-old who reportedly died at the scene. McKay called 911 and reported the crash, but before help arrived, Woods allegedly shot him.
Chad Woods has a criminal record but his son's death left him distraught
The Person County Sheriff's Department told Fox News that McKay was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Sargeant Kevin Morris of the Person County Sheriff’s Office said Woods has a criminal record, but he did not provide more details, the Independent reported.
Woods’ father, Lawrence Claiborne, said his son was distraught after losing his son. “He just, he killed my son. He killed my son,” Chad said after the incident, adding “He was just out of it, going off and stuff."
Woods is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court on August 21. He could face life in prison without parole if convicted of second-degree murder.
Who was Jeffrey McKay?
McKay was an electrical supervisor who worked in the engineering division of the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections.
He lived in Youngsville, a town about 40 miles southeast of Timberlake, Morris said.
Deputies found the stolen truck at Woods' family home. No charges were announced for the deceased teenager's mother, the sheriff's office said as per the publication.
Deputies, as per SKY 5, have been searching for the firearm used in the shooting which Woods threw in a pond.
Prior to the fatal accident, multiple people had called 911 to report a family walking in the roadway before the crash.
The deceased teenager's brother, as reported by the Independent, said he was a good person. “He wanted to be an IT technician. He was doing, he wanted to be positive in life. He wanted to help people. He was a people person.”
