Where is Keith Papini now? Sherri Papini, who staged her own kidnapping, released from halfway home 8 months early
SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA: Keith Papini, ex-husband of Sherri Papini who was associated with a prominent disappearance case in 2016, is now apparently leading a quiet life in Mountain Gate, California.
Keith was captured on camera by the Daily Mail in May 2022 as he was heading to work in California after dropping his children off at school. The source said that Keith petitioned the court to grant him the couple's property and release him from Papini's debts.
The most recent information is that Papini, a Californian who gained notoriety in 2016 for faking her own kidnapping, has been let go from a halfway house, per People.
According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the 41-year-old was freed on Friday, eight months ahead of schedule on her 18-month prison term.
Where was Sherri Papini seen?
According to CBS News, she was relocated from a satellite facility of the Federal Correctional Institution Victorville Medium I in Victorville, California, to a halfway house in August and had been placed under community confinement there.
Photos apparently showing Papini exiting the halfway house were obtained by The Daily Mail. She will continue to be under supervision for the next three years.
The former inmate, dressed in a black cardigan, jeans, and sheepskin boots, then left the chalet-style structure as she was transported away in a white RAM 1500 TRX pick-up truck.
Overview of Sherri Papini's charges
Papini was charged with one count of making false statements to a federal agent and 34 counts of mail fraud on April 12, 2022. On April 18, 2022, she pleaded guilty, confessing that her kidnapping claim was wholly false.
Two days later, her husband filed for divorce, saying in a court petition obtained by People that his wife's absence and kidnapping fraud had devastated the family.
On September 19, 2022, Papini was sentenced to 18 months in jail, followed by 36 months of supervised release. She was also ordered to pay restitution of $309,902 for losses spent during the hunt for her.
Papini reportedly surrendered to authorities on November 8, 2022, to begin serving her sentence.
Keith Papini seeks sole custody of children
Keith, with whom she shares two children, Tyler, 11, and Violet, 9, filed for divorce in April 2022 and is seeking sole custody after she finishes her prison sentence at the end of September.
Papini is preparing to begin her life again after serving time in the medium-security FCI Victorville and is relocating to the little town of Red Bluff, which is located 30 miles south of her prior home in Redding, California.
But first, she has an upcoming court date with her ex-husband Keith to discuss the unpaid credit card debt and her request for a portion of the insurance settlement he obtained in the wake of the Fawn Fire, which destroyed all of Shasta County in October 2021, including Redding.
Keith has previously prevailed in a number of court cases related to the divorce, including getting Tyler and Violet's mother labeled an "unfit parent" and obtaining sole legal and physical custody.
Papini is only permitted to see the children for supervised visits at a courthouse in Redding, as well as for audio and video chats at Keith's discretion, per Daily Mail.
