Hugh Jackman's next is a whodunnit, but it's nothing like the ones we've seen so far. Amazon MGM dropped the trailer for 'The Sheep Detectives', directed by Kyle Balda, with Craig Mazin ('The Last of Us') penning the screenplay based on Leonie Swann’s 2005 novel 'Three Bags Full.' The full-length teaser follows a shepherd (Jackman) who reads detective novels to his sheep, only to be mysteriously murdered later. The sheep put on their sleuthing caps to uncover the killer. The film releases on May 8.

The trailer opens with Jackman's character reading what appears to be the final chapter of a thrilling detective story. He closes the book just when the gripping ending has the flock of sheep on their hooves. The ending is supposedly for another day, which never comes after he is found dead. Distraught as the woolly creatures are, they decide to find the party responsible, and what follows is a bunch of Sheep Holmes investigating a murder. The official synopsis reads “Following the mysterious death of a local shepherd (Jackman), The local cop Tim Derry (Braun), on the other hand, has never solved a serious crime in his life, so the sheep conclude they will have to solve it themselves, even if it means leaving their meadow for the first time and facing the fact that the human world isn’t as simple as it appears in books."

Safe to say, this one brings in the laughs with a novel plotline in the offing. The cast alongside Jackman includes Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Molly Gordon, Hong Chau, Emma Thompson, Tosin Cole, Mandeep Dhillon, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, and Conleth Hill. Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, Brett Goldstein, and Rhys Darby will be voicing the sheep characters. 'The Sheep Detectives' is executive produced by Sarah-Jane Wright, Amelia Granger, Aditya Sood, Tyson Hesse, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Tim Wellspring. Producers are Lindsay Doran, Tim Bevan, and Eric Fellner.

Previously, the film had the same working title as the novel and was slated for a February 20 release. The latest sees the official title and the release date. As for Jackman, 'The Sheep Detectives' is his first release of the year, followed by 'The Death of Robin Hood' on June 19. The latter is written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, and also stars Jodie Comer, Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett, and Noah Jupe in key roles. He was last seen as singer Mike Sardina in 'Song Sung Blue' alongside Kate Hudson. The film was a critical and commercial success.
