LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: While sleeping on the dorm room couch and lecturing the youth about disciplining their mind, Larry Ray hid his real self behind the mask of a former Marine and impressed his followers with war stories. A new Hulu docuseries goes down the rabbit hole of the cult that was led by Larry Ray, who manipulated young minds into derailing their lives into nothingness.
The mini docuseries is directed by Academy Award–nominated director Zachary Heinzerling, known for 'McCartney 3,2,1' (2021), 'Cutie and the Boxer' (2013), and 'Hugh the Hunter' (2015). “Daniel Levin, who was one of the survivors of Larry Ray and one of the main sources for the article, approached me about making a documentary,” Heinzerling said in an interview with Vulture. “He said, ‘I wanna make something that the survivors will be able to watch and see themselves in.’” Levin first approached Heinzerling at the end of 2019, and the two shared the goal of telling the story from the point of view of the victims.

'Stolen Youth' uncovers the abuses directly through the victims of Ray. At the time, Larry Ray was residing with his daughter in the dorm room of Sarah Lawrence, where he pulled several of the youth into his sex cult. According to the official description, Hulu will only look at the victims' accounts of the mind control and abuse that occurred in plain sight under Ray. He has since been convicted on 15 counts including sex trafficking, violent assault, and money laundering, and could face a maximum of life in prison.
The decade-long abuse was investigated by The New Yorker, where they looked into Ray's influence over his daughter's classmates. After details about the cult came to light, he was convicted of sex trafficking, extortion, conspiracy, money laundering, forced labor, and racketeering on April 6, 2022.
