CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: The ending of Apple TV+'s 'Dark Matter' has sparked speculation among fans regarding the series' renewal.

While the protagonist's story reaches a somewhat satisfying conclusion, the uncertainty about his new future and the unresolved drama around other characters have left us eager for another season.

How did 'Dark Matter' Season 1 end?

'Dark Matter' Season 1 ended with Jason 2 (Joel Edgerton) having a change of heart. Realizing how his desire to alter his reality led to multiverse chaos, he handed the ampoules to Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and Charlie (Oakes Fegley), suggesting they escape to a new world.

Daniela and Charlie, accompanied by Jason 1A, arrive at the storage facility and discover numerous other versions of Jason 1 waiting for them.

As the family got frightened, one of the Jason 1's replicas said they were there to say goodbye. With heavy hearts, they all allow Jason 1A to escape Reality 1 with Daniela and Charlie.

In the final montage, we also got a glimpse of other supporting characters who had disappeared from the narrative midway.

Leighton 1 (Dayo Okeniyi), who willingly escaped Reality 1, was seen enjoying his multiverse travels.

Ryan 1, abandoned by Jason 2 in an alternate reality, appeared to have developed the magic drug required to travel through the box. He also met Amanda 2, while the purpose of their meeting remained a mystery.

'Dark Matter' Season 2 could follow Jason Dessen's adventures in a new reality

Though Blake Crouch has not yet confirmed the renewal of his show, the open-ended finale has left fans eager and hopeful for more.

If there is another season, it could explore Jason 1A in a new reality. Season 1 finale ended with the Dessen family opening the gate to a new world. However, it remained a mystery as to where they landed.

Season 2 could explore their adventures in the new, uncertain world with the lingering threat of the violent versions of Jason 1 trying to locate him.

However, we have already seen too much of Jason in Season 1, and exploiting this character any further could be a risky bet. That leaves us with other angles that Blake Crouch could explore in Season 2.

Ryan Holder and Amanda Lucas's storyline may take center stage in 'Dark Matter' Season 2

The characters who have the most potential for Season 2 are Amanda Lucas (Alice Braga) and Ryan Holder (Jimmi Simpson).

Amanda was one of the most important and lovable characters of Season 1 who played a major role in Jason's adventures.

However, her character was sidelined in Episode 7 when she chose to stay in one of the realities.

Since that episode aired, fans speculated that she might be in the same world where Ryan 1 was abandoned. The season finale confirmed this theory, proving that Amanda and Ryan were indeed in the same reality.

In Season 2, Ryan might seek help from Amanda to return to his original world. If this happens, we would be able to learn more about Ryan 3 who was brought to Reality 1 by Jason 2.

Meanwhile, Blair Caplan (Amanda Brugel), who seemed ready to leave the apocalypse world in Season 1's finale could get a major role in Season 2.

The scattered stories of these characters across different realities would make an exciting Season 2.
