'Dark Winds’ Season 4 episode 6 ending explained: Is Emma Leaphorn alive?

'Dark Winds' Season 4 came inches close to killing off a major character. After what has been a rather slow-burning couple of chapters, the season throws a major shocker in the form of a violent face-off between Emma Leaphorn (Deanna Allison) and Irene Vaggan (Franka Potente). With the plotlines finally starting to mesh, the sixth episode makes it clear that Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) is in immense danger, while also offering a glimpse into how Irene's mind works and Emma's courage in standing her ground. The episode also sets the tone for a pacy seventh episode as the series draws to a close.
It's well known that Irene has been romantically obsessed with Joe, leading her to finally confront Emma. To understand the lieutenant's psyche, she also questions him about what he sees in her. Emma responds by slashing Irene’s face with her keys. Irene’s response is bone-chilling: "You abandoned him. You deserve to die." When Irene is shown to have gained the upper hand, she surprisingly spares the character's life to give her a warning. This comes as a major surprise considering her record as a dangerous contract killer with no remorse. On one hand, it is possible that Irene had some respect for Emma for defending herself.
Having already considered Joe as a worthy adversary, Emma may have earned that same respect by showing her toughness, a trait that Joe sees in her. Then comes the possibility that she spared Emma to show Joe the lengths she would go to show her deranged obsession with what she could do to his family. The move also suggests that she could have killed Emma if she wanted to, but it was purely to unsettle the lieutenant. The final explanation could be that Emma wasn't the key threat when compared to Joe's trusted team. Perhaps it wasn't worth adding Joe's wife to the body count. That said, it is also established that Irene's obsession with Joe has only become stronger.
On the season front, 'Dark Winds' hurtles to an emotional and gritty end with Episode 7 titled 'Nániikai' (We Came Back). The penultimate episode hints at themes of a return, likely of the past events that may come back to hit the characters. As the story unfolds, Leaphorn and his team will need to trust in their instincts and each other to counter Irene's plans. The episode airs on Sunday, March 29 at 9:00 PM ET on AMC. The season finale is slated for April 5. At the time of writing, AMC has already renewed 'Dark Winds' for Season 5.
