‘Euphoria’ 3 Episode 2 Recap: Cassie and Maddy reunite while Rue finds herself a dangerous new career
Euphoria Season 3 Episode 2, titled 'America My Dream,' delves into Maddy's trajectory in Hollywood, Cassie's foray into OnlyFans, Nate's debt, and Rue's bizarre new career. The episode also marks the comeback of Cal (Eric Dane), Nate's abusive father, and Jules (Hunter Schafer). It is revealed that Cal did not serve time in prison and is now attending a sex and love addicts support group. Things are much better for everyone's favorite, Jules, who is now living in a swanky apartment gifted to her by her married boyfriend.
Things kick off with Maddy, played by Alexa Demie, arriving in Los Angeles. She works with the affluent Ms. Penzler (Rebecca Pidgeon) by portraying herself as everything her generation is not. However, her rise is cut short by the pandemic, which also forces her mother to shut down her salon. Desperate to help her family, Maddy finds a naive but beautiful girl named Katelyn (Bella Podaras) on TikTok and decides to manage her. To stand out, she pushes her would-be cash cow towards nudity.
Maddy's scheme reaches a dead end after one single mistake. She tries to hook up her client with Dylan Reid, and when Penzler becomes aware of the scheme, she forces Maddy to give up Katelyn as a client, claiming that her clients should not associate with "porn stars." Despite Maddy protesting that girls like Katelyn are worth investing in, because they are part of a “booming industry,” Penzler stands firm. A year later, Katelyn is making $700,000 a month, and Maddy is still in her tiny apartment. Having learned to follow her instincts after this massive loss, Maddy decides to meet Cassie when the latter messages her, possibly for the first time after high school.
The poolside meeting portrays the difference between Maddy and Cassie's current lives. Maddy is a career woman who arrives draped in a magnificent coat oozing confidence, while Cassie is directionless but determined to stand out in loud colors. The meeting starts with Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) expressing regret about losing the "love of her life" to get another. Maddy pretends to forgive Cassie and waits for a few drinks to let the latter reveal the real reason for this meeting. As the career architect suspected, Cassie wants help with her OnlyFans profile. Maddy shares that the platform has become oversaturated and needs individuality to achieve a breakthrough. Cassie innocently replies, “But … who am I?” and it is at this very moment that Maddy chooses her as a prospective cash cow.
Cassie's prince charming, Nate (Jacob Elordi), may also need a cash cow. Viewers find that the former 'bad boy' is now drowning in debt. He owes $550,000 to Naz (Jack Topalian), a gangster-inflected funeral-parlor owner, and needs to pay $100,000 by Friday to stay in his good graces. He tries to collect this money by smooth-talking some of his affluent neighbors. Cassie shows her profile to one of these neighbors, named Heather, who quickly runs to her husband, Fred, to stop him from investing. Seeing his scheme failing, Nate orders Cassie to delete her profile. Cassie obliges, and this show of power supposedly impresses Fred. Nate and Cassie are next seen discussing Maddy. Cassie informs Nate about the poolside meeting after he opens up to her about being scared of secrets in their relationship, due to his childhood experiences. The touching moment turns awkward when Nate refers to Maddy as "my Maddy."
God appears to have smiled on Rue (Zendaya) after last week's shenanigans, and she is now out of Laurie's clutches. Alamo has apparently settled her debt and employed her at the Silver Slipper, one of his strip joints. Rue is now managing the girls at this joint, one of whom is Angel (Priscilla Delgado). The duo strikes up a friendship, which eventually leads to them being intimate in the parking lot. Despite the hookup, it is clear that Rue's heart still lies with Jules. Rue shares with Angel that she visited Jules sometime after high school. It was around the time that she had relapsed, which again caused her to push Jules away. It is also revealed that Rue's family no longer keeps in touch with her. The episode sees Rue visiting Jules again, but this time her former flame seems distant. She tells Rue that things can't go back to the way they were. However, she ends up inviting her ex for a bath.
Unfortunately, things don't end on such a good note for Angel, who breaks down after finding out that Tish died due to an overdose in the last episode. Alamo instructs Rue to send her to a rehab center in exchange for a promotion. Rue succeeds in convincing Angel, but as she drops her off at the center, it dawns on her and the audience that this may be the last time Angel is in the picture. Angel's monologue, “More people go missing here (California) than anywhere else in America. It’s like there’s a big magnet under the soil attracting evil,” further establishes this theory. 'Euphoria' will return next Sunday on HBO with Cassie and Nate's wedding, promising more drama and heart-wrenching twists.
