LVIV, POLAND: With each episode of Hulu's 'We Were the Lucky Ones,' the heartbreak deepens.

The series, based on Georgia Hunter's novel of the same name, chronicles the harrowing journey of the Kurc family as they fight for survival during the Holocaust.

Amid this, new challenges have emerged for Helina Kurc (Joey King), who fled to Lviv for a better life. However, the city, once considered a haven, is now overrun with hatred towards Jews.

Rather than fleeing, Halina remains behind for a perilous mission that could lead to an unending cycle of misery and torment for her.

As depicted in the previous episode, Lviv is increasingly engulfed in a hate campaign against Jews, with several incidents of public beatings targeting them.

Furthermore, Halina's lover, Adam Eichenwald (Sam Woolf), disappears, compounding their existing troubles.

Along with her brother Jakob Kurc (Amit Rahav) and his wife Bella (Eva Feiler), Halina initially decides to flee for their safety, but she later has a change of heart.

Upon learning about an able-bodied men's labor camp on Janowska Street, Halina speaks with an escapee and speculates that Adam might be held there.

Halina searches for Adam, expressing her love for him as she declines Jakob's invitation to accompany him.

Determined to locate Adam, Halina remains oblivious to the gravity of the situation, as infiltrating a German camp and escaping unscathed is an immensely difficult and dangerous task.

Claiming to be Adam's spouse, Halina employs her cunning to secure his release, arguing that he was wrongfully imprisoned solely for being Jewish.

To summarize, Halina, who initially harbored doubts about her feelings for Adam, appeared least concerned upon learning of his disappearance.

However, when Halina discovers the possibility of Adam still being alive at the camp, she undergoes a profound change of heart, signifying a deeper realization of the bond she shares with him.

Halina's decision to find Adam despite the great danger showcases her unwavering determination, courage, and profound love for him.

It should be recognized that her defiance in the face of peril may motivate others to resist persecution and fight for their existence, thereby potentially igniting a broader movement of resistance against the Nazi dictatorship.

That being said, Halina has already courted significant trouble for herself by assuming the role of a German prisoner's wife and disregarding his Jewish identity, implying that further challenges undoubtedly lie ahead for them in the future.

Whatever awaits Halina, one thing is certain: she is easily one of the show's most powerful characters, brave enough to confront the danger while she still had the option of fleeing.

'We Were the Lucky Ones' Episode 5 is now streaming on Hulu.
