BRIGHTONS, SCOTLAND: A transgender murderer, who changed her gender from male to female, says she fears moving to a men's prison claiming she would not survive there. Currently locked up in a women's prison, Sophie Eastwood, now claims she is a baby.

Previously known by the name Daniel Eastwood, Sophie, at the age of 18, was arrested for dangerous driving and was in jail at the Dumfries Young Offenders Institution. However, a month away from her to serve the prison sentence, she strangled an inmate to death. Paul Algie was killed with shoelaces in 2004, reported Daily Mail.

Who is Sophie Eastwood?

The now 38-year-old Eastwood, who identifies as a female, underwent her transition in prison in 2017 and is being held at Scotland's only all-female jail- HMP Cornton Vale. The prison has already been dealing with a row of controversies following Isla Bryson, the convicted rapist who attacked two women. The incident took place while she lived as a man.

Scottish Prison Service's response

A full case review has been announced by the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) for those transgenders who are currently in custody and the controversies have questioned Nicola Sturgeon's role as First Minister. Now Eastwood, who has also claimed she identifies as a baby, has revealed she is worried she "would not survive" in a male prison if she was moved. Revealing that she was threatened by male cellmates, the transgender explained the situation before she moved to Cornton Vale. "The main threat was that I would suffer serious sexual violence. It was a relief to be moved to the female estate where I have felt safe and I've gained the trust of fellow prisoners."

"I think Scottish Prison Service staff manage trans prisoners well but it would be impossible for me to feel safe in a male prison. I have no history of gender violence. But the recent outcry has led to the SPS having to review every transgender person in custody. I believe I'm in the right place and don't think I could survive in the male estate," she added.

In January 2023, Bryson was shifted to the male wing of jail following public outrage. SPS will continue to perform the full case. "It's really unfortunate because the public's view of trans people generally has now been damaged but not by the behavior of any trans person," she said as Eastwood's behavior and conduct has become controversial.

Eastwood, who transitioned from a male to a female, announced last year that she was identified as a baby. Demanding guards to hold her hands, she also took noon-time naps and some baby food.
