'Stuck': 'Foul-smelling pebble-like stones' come out of Destiny Moon's mouth

In TLC's 'Stuck', a woman called Destiny Moon comes to ENT Brookhaven in Atlanta with the problem of stones coming out of her mouth. They aren't genuine stones, but you could hear them referred to as tonsils stones which come out of 'tonsillar crypts' or holes in tonsils. They look a lot like the pebble stones we've seen in the aquarium. "Crypts" is the medical word for these stones.

Destiny also said her tonsils were several times larger and that she had a terrible gag reflex. As she coughed, she began choking on something, and these small white objects began to emerge from her mouth. They smell like sulfur to her, and when she googled them, she discovered that they are tonsil stones.

What exactly are crypts?

Tonsillar crypts are pockets or folds in the tonsils, which are soft tissue lumps on each side of the throat that are part of the immune system. There are 10 to 20 crypts in the normal adult tonsil. Tonsil crypts are lines that form in the tonsils when two folds meet. Tonsil crypts are typically tiny and debris-free. If food, mucus, or other debris gets lodged in them, it can solidify into tonsil stones, also known as tonsilloliths.

Dr Mark Bass says the worst-case scenario could be the definitive treatment is to remove the tonsils. But first, he takes a different, more straightforward approach: he sprays some substance down her throat, numbing it and suppressing the gag reflex. After that, he examined the mouth and attempted to remove the stones with some sort of equipment. But, like fate, her tonsils are doomed, and the only way to help her is to have them removed. The doctor also says” Tonsil stones have a foul smell, like a dead animal”.

Destiny is getting ready for her surgery, and she just wants to get it over with as soon as possible. The doctors began the procedure by progressively extracting them. They also mentioned that she will have the worst aching throat for a long period following the procedure. However, fate is on her side since she will now be able to enjoy her food and her life.
