In this age of digitalization, things like ‘body shaming’ and ‘bullying’ have become a curse for everyone. Whether you are too thin or chubby, there will always be some morons on social media who’ll make fun of you to demoralize you and that’s the time when you buckle up and show the world how great you truly are. And that’s the premise of the show that we are going to discuss right now.

FOX’s upcoming comedy-drama series ‘The Big Leap’ tackles the subject of body shaming and shows how some people broke all the stereotypes to become what they intended to. The show, which is loosely based on the British reality series ‘The Big Ballet’, revolves around a group of people who are trying to change their lives by participating in the modern rendition of ‘Swan Lake’.

However, things change drastically when they are told that they are “too fat” to perform ballet. They have 20 weeks to defy every odd and put up a performance that would change everyone’s mindset. The show seems to be a worthy addition to the network’s catalog of comedy series. Shows like ‘Duncanville’, ‘The Great North’ and ‘Call Me Kat’ have done exceptionally well in recent times.

With the story focusing on underdogs, the show will surely appeal to a lot of viewers. Here’s everything we know about it.

Plot

“The show revolves around a group of diverse, down-on-their-luck characters attempting to change their lives by participating in a potentially life-ruining reality dance show featuring a modern reimagining of ‘Swan Lake’. What this group of underdogs lacks in dance training, they make up for with their edge, wit, and desire to reimagine an iconic story to fit their own mold.”

Spoilers

The series is based on the UK reality TV show ‘The Big Ballet’ which aired on Channel 4. The reality show featured 18 plus-size amateur dancers, many of whom were told they were too fat to dance when they were young as they are recruited to work on a production of ‘Swan Lake’ and a former Royal Ballet principal will help them in achieving that feat.

The show received mixed reviews from the critics, who believed that words like “fat” or “large bum” were used frequently in the project, making it look like people are trying to disrespect the dancer by body shaming them. This is one of the reasons why the show never returned for another season.

Cast

The cast of the upcoming FOX show will feature some familiar faces like Scott Foley, who’ll be playing the role of Nick Blackburn while Piper Perabo will be portraying the character of Paula Clark. On the other hand, Teri Polo will play Julia Perkins on the show.

Foley is known for his roles in projects such as ‘Scrubs’, ‘Scream 3’, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Scandal’. Meanwhile, Piper Perabo gained recognition after her role in the 2000 movie ‘Coyote Ugly’. She played the main role in the series ‘Covert Affairs’ and was nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Actress category.

Other actors to feature on the show include Simone Recasner (Gabby Lewis), Mallory Jansen (Monica Sullivan), Ser’Darius Blain (Reggie Sadler), Kevin Daniels (Wayne Fontaine), and Anna Grace Barlow (Brittney Lovewell).

Creators

The show has been created by Liz Heldens. The writer-turned-producer is known for producing and writing shows like ‘Friday Night Lights’, ‘Boston Public’, ‘Bionic Woman’ and ‘Mercy’. Apart from Heldens, notable personalities like Jason Winer and Sue Naegle serve as executive producers on the show.
