Plot
“The show revolves around a group of diverse, down-on-their-luck characters attempting to change their lives by participating in a potentially life-ruining reality dance show featuring a modern reimagining of ‘Swan Lake’. What this group of underdogs lacks in dance training, they make up for with their edge, wit, and desire to reimagine an iconic story to fit their own mold.”
Spoilers
The series is based on the UK reality TV show ‘The Big Ballet’ which aired on Channel 4. The reality show featured 18 plus-size amateur dancers, many of whom were told they were too fat to dance when they were young as they are recruited to work on a production of ‘Swan Lake’ and a former Royal Ballet principal will help them in achieving that feat.
The show received mixed reviews from the critics, who believed that words like “fat” or “large bum” were used frequently in the project, making it look like people are trying to disrespect the dancer by body shaming them. This is one of the reasons why the show never returned for another season.
