The Wonders from 'That Thing You Do!' are jamming again to honor Adam Schlesinger, fans go berserk
Speaking of One Direction's rumored reunion, another former heartthrob boyband has confirmed that it is set to reunite for a good cause. The 'Wonders' or the 'Onedars', however you remember them by, are making a comeback to help raise money for a COVID-19 relief fund. They will also pay a tribute to the late Adam Schlesinger, who died on April 1, of coronavirus complications. Schlesinger wrote the Oscar-nominated official soundtrack of the movie, 'That Thing you Do!'.
All four members from the fictional band from 1996 film, 'That Thing You Do!' i.e Tom Everett Scott (Guy Patterson), Johnathan Schaech (Jimmy), Steve Zahn (Lenny) and Ethan Embry (TB Player) are confirmed to be participating in the event. The participants took to Twitter to make the official announcement on April 13. The band will be coming together, albeit virtually, for the first time in 25 years to share memories from their time filming for the iconic musical comedy.
Liv Tyler is also slated to appear during the watch party. Fans will be able to live stream the Zoom conversation at 4 pm PT/ 7 pm ET on Friday, April 17 and also send in questions for the cast to answer. Whether Tom Hanks, the writer, and director of the film will be in attendance, is not certain. The Oscar-winning actor who recently hosted the 'at-home' edition of Saturday Night Live, is still recovering from COVID-19 which he contracted last month when in Australia, alongside his wife Rita Wilson.
However, upon hearing about Schlesinger's death, Hanks conveyed his condolences saying that the 1996 film would not have been possible without him.
"There would be no Playtone without Adam Schlesinger, without his That Thing You Do! He was a One-der. Lost him to Covid-19. Terribly sad today," Hanks tweeted.
Schaech, who played Jimmy in the film, also took to Twitter to send his condolences: "#Adamschlesinger died today because of the #coronavirus WE all are sad. You were the talent, Adam! RIP. Our hearts are broken in a million pieces #ThatThingYouDo @tomhanks @ritawilson and the rest of the #Playtone family. @TomEScott @EmbryEthan @ColinHanks @LivTyler"
The organizers for the reunion have confirmed to there being additional guests, and the announcements will be made shortly.
Fans of the films have gone berserk at the news of a 'That Thing You Do!' reunion, and Twitter has been flooded with the lyrics of the title track. Furthermore, their excitement has been sky-high since the announcement.
"I just saw that the Wonders (from the movie "That Thing You Do") are reuniting, and it is honestly the first time I've gotten emotional during this quarantine," one fan tweeted.
This fan gave kudos to Tom Hanks for basically shaping her childhood saying, "I just fangirled like crazy over this!! That Thing You Do was a staple in my life for a long time!! @tomhanks has brought softball into my childhood (League of Their Own) then brought in music. You all rock!!"
Shockingly, for this one 'The Bachelor: Listen to Your Heart' took the backseat with the 'That Thing Yo Do' announcement: "I got so distracted from #LTYH with the Oneders reunion. I’m dancing around my apartment screaming That Thing You Do."
"The O-Needers are getting back together! That Thing You Do is such a great guilty pleasure movie", another quipped.
