Suzanne Morphew's death: Internet speculates if missing Colorado mom actually went on bike ride the day she disappeared

'Her bike was found near her home. There were no signs it had been wrecked,' said former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer

SALIDA, COLORADO: The mystery of Suzanne Morphew's death deepened after the remains of the missing Colorado mother were found in Moffat in Saguache County, on September 22, 2023.

Officers had been searching the area for an unrelated case when they came upon Morphew's remains.

Morphew allegedly went on a bike ride when she disappeared on Mother's Day in 2020, CNN reported. 

However, latest investigation on the case prompted social media users to speculate if Morphew really went on a bike ride on the day she went missing. 

Former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer took to X (formerly Twitter) to share one such speculation which theorized that Morphew did not go on a bike ride on May 10, 2020, the day she was last seen before being reported missing. 

Suzanne Morphew's daily routine contradicts 'bike ride' theory

The Internet has continued to speculate over Morphew's disappearance ever since her remains were found in Saguache County last month. 

More recently, Former FBI agent Coffindaffer shared a theory that prompted netizens to speculate if Morphew actually went on a bike ride on the day of her disappearance. 

"By all accounts, #Suzanne Morphew was a mountain biker and typically rode daily. She would usually drive her Range Rover to a trail entry, and then bike from there," Coffindaffer began.

"It's important to note, she biked wearing a helmet and sunglasses (and) a camelback (for hydration)," she added.

"On the day she went missing, her bike was found near her home. There were no signs it had been wrecked," the former FBI agent continued. 

"Further, her helmet was found quite distance from where her bike was found. Her sunglasses, camelback, credit card, and ID were in her Range Rover," she mentioned. 

"All of these facts indicate she didn't go on a bike ride," Coffindaffer claimed. 

"Further, remains were found approximately 45 minutes from her home and the "'Bike wreck,'" she mentioned. 

Coffindaffer also mentioned Morphew's husband, saying, "#BarryMorphew was in the county where her body was found, but the date is missing." 

"When was he there? This will be an important task for law enforcement to add to their timeline," she said. 

"There were some missing puzzle pieces. Now that Suzanne's body has been found, I believe law enforcement will be able to complete the puzzle," Coffindaffer concluded. 

"Def she’s always got the camelback, her Santa Cruz doesn’t have bottle cages. From the body cam footage it always sounded like she wears padded shorts, not long mountain biking shorts or cycling bibs," one user mentioned.

"With all that (the flat pedals, the ‘everyday’ big sunglasses, camelback etc) she’s a more casual rider, but for sure she’s not going out w/out the camelback bladder, she’s got no other way of taking water w her," they added. 

"LE also said in bodycam to Barry that the bike was turned up towards the top of the hill, then B finishes LE’s sentence 'so maybe it flipped?' but it wasn’t," the user said.

"The bike was facing down the hill, it’s just that the front wheel is turned 180 degrees. If someone on foot sends the bike down the hill front first, especially with that thick brush, it’s just going to stop the bike and turn the front wheel backwards and lay down," they concluded. 

"I dont believe she went on a bike ride at all. Infact after looking at all the available evidence I believe she never left that home alive, That she was taken in them very early hours and disposed off before he took the trip to 'do his next job,'" another user added. 

"Unless she walked back to the house and tossed these items in the car after the brakes locked up and she took a tumble then walked back home. She couldn't roll the bike home as the Deputy proved so she may have been going to take the car back to get it," one said. 

"My personal opinion is that she was not alive on Saturday. I have yet to see any solid proof (someone spoke to her or actually saw her) on Saturday," one opined. 

One responded to Coffindaffer's post saying, "I’ve been saying this for a few days."

Another said, "I think there's DNA on the bike and helmet," to which Coffindaffer replied saying, "Yes the question is, is it all from the same person and is it touch DNA?"

Suzanne Morphew's bike was recovered the same day she went missing 

Morphew reportedly went on a bike ride before her disappearance in 2020. According to Fox News, her bike was discovered in a ravine along Highway 50 and County Road 225 in Chaffee County, near her family's Maysville home the same day she went missing. 

Investigators also recovered her helmet a few days after finding her bike, roughly a mile away from where they found the vehicle, CBS News reported. 

The publication also mentioned that Morphew was relatively new at mountain biking. 

As per Denver Gazette, after Morphew went missing, her bicycle was gone but her Range Rover was in the garage.

Officials later found mysterious male DNA from the same vehicle belonging to Morphew. 

Deputies who found her bike later said revealed that it had "colorful pedals" and that the vehicle's handlebars were twisted.

After officials spotted Morphew's turquoise bike helmet in an undamaged .84 miles from where they found the bike and 10 meters off of the highway, they reportedly began suspecting she never took a bike ride. 

Her camelback & sunglasses, which her family said Morphew always took with her when she wenr for mountain biking, were instead found in Range Rover SUV.

However, that case is currently under investigation and it is yet to be confirmed if Morphew went for a bike ride on the day of her disappearance. 

Was anyone arrested over Suzanne Morphew's disappearance? 

Morphew's husband, Barry, was initially accused of killing his wife and charged with first-degree murder for allegedly tampering with physical evidence in 2021. 

Prosecutors dropped the charged against Barry a year later and said they wanted more time to find the missing mother's body. 

Barry's legal team sued prosecutors and investigators for $15 million and accused them of violating his constitutional rights.

"Barry is with his daughters and they are all struggling with immense shock and grief after learning today that their mother and wife whom they deeply love was found deceased," Barry’s attorney, Iris Eytan, said after Morphew's remains were found, as per CNN.

"They had faith that their wife and mom would walk back into their lives again. The news is heartbreaking," the attorney added.

"From what we know, Barry is as innocent as he was from Day 1," Eytan mentioned, adding that a district attorney and law enforcement "got it wrong" during the 2021 charge.

"We hope the authorities will quickly admit their wrongful persecution of Barry, an innocent man, to treat the Morphews like the victims they are and charge whoever is responsible for Suzanne Morphew’s death," the lawyer concluded.

So far, no arrests have been made in connection to Morphew's disappearance and death.
