'Suits' season 9 episode 5 review: Things at the firm go from bad to worse, but give Mike a reason to stay

Our best bet is that Mike is here to stay for a while, and we are all for it! We cannot wait for Wednesday, August 21, to see if our dream team will get back together.

Ever since season nine premiered, Zane Specter Litt Wheeler Williams has not been able to catch a break. Be it losing clients, or potential applicants, the firm has taken a hit, and rubbing salt to the wound has been the arrival of Faye Richardson (Denise Crosby), who wants everyone to play by the rules. This, as fans know, is something most senior partners are not familiar with. Winning by hook or crook has been the motto of the firm for so long that clearly, they are having trouble letting go of old habits.

In the most recently aired season nine episode five, ‘If the Shoe Fits,’ we see that despite the multiple warnings and Faye breathing down their necks, Samantha Wheeler (Katherine Heigl) is more concerned about not letting someone get an upper hand than the long-term goal of saving the sinking ship that is Zane Specter Litt Wheeler Williams. Of course, Mike Ross (Patrick J Adams) picking a fight with his mentor happens to be the convenient excuse, but is it though?

Samantha has been given multiple warnings, and each time she chose to steamroll over it, and now, she is paying the price for it. Faye has fired her, and she definitely has the power to do it. How the former partner of Zane Specter Litt Wheeler Williams will respond to the bomb remains to be seen.

Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) was surprisingly calm about losing to Mike, and like Samantha pointed out, he seemed to revel in his protégé’s win. Moreover, he knows that he needs to play by the books or there will be hell to pay. Clearly, his relationship with Donna Paulsen (Sarah Rafferty) is giving him a clearer picture of what the long haul looks like.

It was a little unsatisfying to see Mike packing up so soon, but clearly, as Harvey points out time and again on the show, his packing up and traveling across the country for one small fight doesn’t add up. Our guess is, Harvey asks Mike to stay on for a while, and help the firm function without Samantha, or better yet, ask him to find a way to bring her back.

Our best bet is that Mike is here to stay for a while, and we are all for it! We cannot wait for Wednesday, August 21, to see if our dream team will get back together.

Side note: Did you notice that little Easter Egg where Mike said, “You wouldn’t believe how good she is doing" when Katrina Bennett (Amanda Schull) asks him how his wife Rachel Zane (Meghan Markle) is doing?

The Duchess is doing alright, thank you very much!
