BROOKLYN, NEW YORK: In Netflix's latest biographical drama, Regina King, the Oscar-winning actress, steps into the shoes of iconic politician, Shirley Chisholm, who made waves in the early 1970s by daring to run for president of the United States.

Chisholm faced immense scrutiny as both a woman and a Black Congresswoman, yet she fearlessly pushed forward.

'Shirley', streaming on Netflix, focuses on Chisholm's journey from a Brooklyn school teacher to becoming the first Black woman elected to Congress.

Chisholm's impatience to make a difference is palpable, along with her genuine care for the people she serves.

The film briefly gives us a glimpse of her early days in the Capitol, where she challenges the status quo by confronting the Speaker of the House when assigned to the Agricultural Committee, a role she believes she deserves more than.

Regina King's portrayal of Chisholm is powerful and fiery, commanding attention with her performance. She brings out Chisholm's dignity and strength, showcasing her fearless campaign strategy and unwavering commitment to her goals.

The movie not only delves into this pivotal moment in history but also explores her personal life and characteristics.

The film humanizes Chisholm, showing her vulnerabilities and struggles, particularly in her personal life.

While her relationship with her sister and husband is touched upon, it, however, feels slightly underdeveloped compared to her political journey.

With a stellar ensemble cast including Lance Reddick, Lucas Hedges, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and others, 'Shirley' excels in capturing the era with its visuals and music. The transitions seamlessly transport viewers to that time, enhancing the viewing experience.

'Shirley' may follow a straightforward biopic narrative, but it's Regina King's captivating performance that makes it a must-watch.

'Shirley' is now streaming on Netflix
