Sherlock Holmes 3 is finally happening and Robert Downey Jr. is on board for the 2020 release
Well, folks, the wait is finally over. Sherlock Holmes 3 is finally happening, and the release is set for the Christmas of 2020. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law will star as the returning characters of the genius detective and his trusted aide, Dr. Watson, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Warner Bros big-screen series has announced the third installment, but no director has been attached to the project yet. The previous movies were directed by Guy Ritchie, and the new one will be releasing about nine years after the first sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which debuted in December 2011.
The movie raked in $545.4 million at the worldwide box office, only slightly more than the 2009 Sherlock Holmes, which earned $524 million globally. The producers for Sherlock Holmes 3 have been declared as Susan Downey, Joel Silver, and Lionel Wigram, with Narcos co-creator Chris Brancato writing the script.
Sherlock and Watson might be returning for the upcoming movie, but the same cannot be said for the dreaded villain Moriarty. Jared Harris told Digital Spy: "I think the last iteration when they last wrote a screenplay for Sherlock Holmes 3, Moriarty wasn't in it. So, I'm not focusing on it."
It was earlier reported that the back-to-back Marvel releases, as well as release schedules, had kept a third Holmes film from happening. However, the 2020 Christmas calendar looks pretty much jammed even now, since James Cameron's second installment of his hit Avatar series is also slated for a release on December 18 the same year.
