'Search Party' Season 3 Preview: Will April's murder come back to haunt Dory?

April had been blackmailing the group with proof she had in her possession — a cassette tape that contained a confession enough to incriminate all four of them in the murder of Keith Powell

April had it coming. It was evident early on that she had rubbed Dory Sief (Alia Shawkat) the wrong way. And considering Dory's newfound manic, there was hardly ever a doubt of what April (Phoebe Tyers) had in store for herself.

April, Dory and Drew's (John Reynolds) neighbor, had been blackmailing the group with proof she had in her possession — a cassette tape that contained a confession enough to incriminate all four of them, Portia Davenport (Meredith Hagner) and Elliott Goss (John Early) included, in the murder of Keith Powell (Ron Livingston). The so-called confession was recorded when Dory and Drew were fighting loudly about the accidental death upon returning from the dastardly trip to Montreal. Following this, April tried to spook the two in her signature April manner.

She first asked the group for $60,000 and soon all four set out to figure out how they can gather such a high sum of money. Add to that the fact that April's presence is hardly comforting in any manner and she continues to hound the group over and over again. Towards the end of the season, everyone but Dory is sure that at midnight, they will be arrested. She is confident that she can get April to settle midway. When the trio leave her to handle matters on her own, Dory is suddenly struck with an idea.

Mary Ferguson (J Smith-Cameron) had sent Julian Marcus (Brandon Micheal Hall) explicit images of herself. While Julian is too stressed out to do anything at the moment, Dory seizes the opportunity and steals his phone. The idea is simple: Dory will trade Julian's phone with incriminating evidence against Mary for the cassette with the recording. If April is so eager to blackmail, she might as well blackmail Mary and get a lot more money than just $60,000.

The exchange was supposed to go flawlessly — there was no room for it to get messed up. But April riled Dory up. She started commenting on Dory's conscious and existence, calling her and her friends "pointless, entitled, empty idiots". April also threatens her: "If your conscience doesn't haunt you, I will forever." And just like that Dory decides to get rid of April for good by shoving her off the ferry — no second-guessing, no doubts.

She then slyly escapes to Mary's celebratory party until she is arrested there for the murder of Keith Powell (Ron Livingston). Just as Keith's death comes back to bite Dory and her friends, will April's murder haunt her? Season 3 deals with the trial of Keith's murder as Drew and Dory find themselves accused. But if we are to go by the series' narrative, Tyers will be making a comeback this season.

Not to forget about April's twin sister June. Season 3 of 'Search Party' will premiere on HBO Max on June 25. Season 1 and 2 are also available to stream on the service.
