'That was cool!': 'Saturday Night Live' fans go gaga over 'Avatar' parody sketch
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The first 'Saturday Night Live' episode of the year had something truly out of the world in store. 'SNL' kicked off the second hour of their first episode of 2023 with a parody of the most talked-about film of 2022: 'Avatar - The Way of Water'. The parody had many instances going back and forth from the plot of the original film to the sequel.
In the parody, Mikey Day played the role of Jake Sully from the movies, with Ego Nwodim playing Neytiri. Incidentally, the cast had two Na'vi's, one played by host Aubrey Plaza, who aced the role perfectly, while cast member Heidi Gardner played the other.

The parody also included Kenan Thompson as Frito, pronounced Free-ho-tay, portraying a human in disguise as a Na'vi. However, what fans loved the most were the costume changes and the funny names, besides the locations used, which were accurate and central to the original movie. The team declared right before the commercial break that all the cast members appeared blue thanks to the blue light on the stage.

The audience was also surprised and raised a question about the classic 'Papyrus' gag. The gag of that parody, starring Ryan Gosling, was about a man keen on understanding the lack of creativity behind 'Avatar's primary font, which in fact led to James Cameron changing the font and logo of the original movie. However, nobody mentioned it in the new parody.
According to Comicbook, Director James Cameron previously joked about SNL's infamous sketch, "It haunted me. Not really, It is funny. I'm just astonished that they spent that much money on a little cinematic vignette that's around such a wispy, thin concept. I said, 'Alright guys, we are now doubling down! We are using Papyrus for everything! The funniest thing about that whole story is I didn't even know it was Papyrus, no one asked me! I just thought that the art department had come up with this cool font."
'What a funny skit'
SNL fans were over the moon with the great depiction of 'Avatar' characters. "Aubrey Plaza as an avatar was so great #SNL" remarked a fan on Twitter. "Not “Avatar ” Lmfaoooo #SNL" said another. "Yes! And what a funny skit," someone concurred. "That was cool," gushed another. Shoutout to the makeup and set departments for this Avatar sketch!" a fan wrote.
