RICHLAND HILLS, TEXAS: A tragic incident unfolded in North Texas after a 62-year-old grandfather stabbed his eight-year-old grandson to death just hours into the New Year, according to local police. Authorities responded to an unidentified 911 call at a home on Labadie Drive in Richland Hills around 7.30 am on Sunday, January 1.

Upon arrival, police found an eight-year-old boy who had been stabbed to death with no signs of the killer around, after the grandfather Phillip Hughes allegedly fled the scene. Shortly, 62-year-old was located a few blocks away from the home and arrested. Subsequently, authorities were able to recover a sharp-bladed weapon believed to be the murder weapon, according to FOX News.

Hughes was taken into custody without incident and was being held on capital murder charges while he waits for his arraignment. Police believe the 62-year-old acted alone in the young boy’s fatal stabbing and nobody else was involved. An investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to work to determine a motive for the senseless stabbing. "We have lots of questions, just like everyone else has. And throughout the investigation we'll hopefully be able to answer all the questions and why this tragedy occurred," said Officer Sheena McEachran with the Richland Hills Police Department.

"There's not a lot of words right now to describe a lot of the feelings involved, but we are doing everything we can to investigate this fully and making sure we bring justice for the family," reported the source. Further details of the investigation have not been released as police said they don't have much information on Hughes and haven't dealt with him in the past.

“The Richland Hills Police Department would like to express its condolences to those affected by the senseless tragedy and ask for continued prayers for everyone involved,” the department said in a statement, according to New York Post. Phillip Hughes is currently being held at the North Richland Hills Police Department’s Joint Detention.
