'Penny Dreadful: City of Angels': Release date, plot, cast, and everything else you need to know about the spin-off

Influenced by Mexican-American folklore, the spin-off series will focus on exploring a mix of both supernatural significance and the cultural elements prevalent at the time

Showtime has finally made it official that the highly anticipated spin-off of the acclaimed horror drama 'Penny Dreadful' titled 'Penny Dreadful: City of Angels' is very much happening.

The original show reached its season finale three years ago in 2016 and had amassed a massive following with its impressive cast that included Eva Green and Josh Hartnett.

The spin-off will be an American take on the story and is said to retain the same supernatural elements that the original became so popular for.

Release date:

There has been no premiere date announced for the spin-off, but it is believed that production on the show is underway.

Plot:

As reported by Variety, the spin-off will carry the same elements of horror but, instead of the original show's Victorian London setting, 'Penny Dreadful: City of Angels' will take place in 1938 Los Angeles.

The place was deeply influenced by Mexican-American folklore at the time, and the spin-off series will focus on exploring a mix of both supernatural significance and the cultural elements prevalent at the time.

The setting, along with the conflict between the character connected to the diety Santa Muerte and others who worship the Devil, will create the perfect concoction of horror in the upcoming series.

“'Penny Dreadful: City of Angels' promises to be an extraordinary saga of familial love set against the terrifying monsters that are around us and within us," said the show's creator, John Logan.

“We will now be grappling with specific historical and real-world political, religious, social and racial issues. In 1938, Los Angeles was facing some hard questions about its future and its soul. Our characters must do the same. There are no easy answers. There are only powerful questions and arresting moral challenges. As always in the world of Penny Dreadful, there are no heroes or villains in this world, only protagonists and antagonists; complicated and conflicted characters living on the fulcrum of moral choice.”

Creator:

'Penny Dreadful' creator, writer, and executive producer John Logan is reprising his role with the in-production spin-off series.

“'Penny Dreadful: City of Angels' will have a social consciousness and historical awareness that we chose not to explore in the ‘Penny Dreadful’ London storylines,” Logan has said of the upcoming show.

Cast:

While none of the cast members from the original show are attached to 'City of Angels' in any way, the spin-off still has some pretty big names in its promising cast.

Best known for her role as Margaery Tyrell in the HBO drama 'Game of Thrones', Dormer is set to star as Magda, a “supernatural demon who can take the appearance of anyone she chooses and manifests in a number of guises throughout the story”.

The character has been described as “charismatic, clever and chameleon-like”, and is also said to be a dangerous enemy and an indispensable ally.

Daniel Zovatto will star opposite Dormer as Detective Tiago Vega, while Jessica Garza plays Josefina Vega, and Johnathan Nieves will play the role of Mateo Vega.

Sebastian Chacon will play the character of Fly Rico, who has been described as "the powerful leader of the Pachucos, a Latino “Zoot Suit” gang. Rico exudes an irresistible bravado and is slick, smart and dangerous," reports Deadline

Trailer:

Unfortunately, with the spin-off being in early stages of production, there isn't a trailer or teaser for the show yet.
