EL PASO, TEXAS: Patrick Crusius pleaded guilty to federal charges following his lone murder of 23 people in a Walmart in the neighborhood of Cielo Vista in 2019. Crusius, 24, appeared on Wednesday, February 8 at the Albert Armendariz Sr Federal Courthouse in Downtown El Paso while wearing a blue prison uniform and entered a plea of guilty to 90 federal offenses.

Family members of the victims of the incident crowded the courtroom. Crusius, who had his face covered, was shackled from the front and had a metal chain around his waist, according to the El Paso Times. The bloodiest mass shooting occurred on August 3, 2019, when Crusius entered the El Paso Walmart with an AK-47 assault rifle and killed a bunch of people. Authorities claim that after arriving at the Walmart, Crusius started firing at people in the parking lot and carried on inside the store. After the attack, the suspect came forward and admitted, "I'm the shooter." There are 90 federal charges against Crusius, including numerous hate crimes.

What was the motive for Patrick Crusius?

Patrick Crusius wrote a 2,300-word manifesto titled 'The Inconvenient Truth', in which he claimed that his deadly act was motivated by racism and reports of a 'Hispanic invasion of Texas'. On the day of the crime, Crusius, a resident of Allen, Texas, traveled more than 600 miles from the Dallas suburb to El Paso, a city with a sizable Latino population that is close to the US-Mexico border.

When Crusius arrived in El Paso, he posted a racist internet tirade declaring, "This attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas," according to court documents. Crusius was carrying an AK-47 assault rifle and several rounds of ammunition. Crusius said, "I am simply defending my country from cultural and ethnic replacement brought on by an invasion." The majority of the 23 people who died and were injured, including an additional 25, were Mexican citizens or people of Mexican lineage.
