Oscars 2021: Frances McDormand wins Best Actress for 'Nomadland', fans say Viola Davis was 'robbed'
Gone are the days when an actress's role was just limited to being a damsel in distress or just an eye candy. The women of Hollywood are taking on bigger and meatier roles and showcasing that they are a lot more than just pretty faces. Every year the Academy Awards recognizes some of the best talents in the entertainment industry.
For the 93rd Academy Awards some exceptionally talented actresses like Viola Davis ('Ma Rainey's Black Bottom'), Andra Day ('The United States vs. Billie Holiday'), Vanessa Kirby ('Pieces of a Woman'). Frances McDormand ('Nomadland'), and Carey Mulligan ('Promising Young Woman') were the nominees for the highly coveted 'Best Actress in a Leading Role' award. Although all of these women are without a doubt highly deserving of taking home the trophy, McDormand was finally awarded for her stunning performance in 'Nomadland'.

Although McDormand is without a doubt an exceptional actress, many were disappointed over Viola Davis not winning the award. Some felt that the 'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom' star should have taken home the coveted trophy.
A fan tweeted, "Seriously?! The #Oscars got it wrong in the Best Actor and Best Actress Categories! Of course,,,, two white people "won".... not with the Grand Performances by VIola, Steven and Chad in the mix! #Oscars2021." Another fan wondered, "In what world is Viola Davis’ Ma Rainey not deserving of the Best Actress Oscar?!? #Oscars."

Another fan slammed the Academy for their poor diversity with, "F**k #Oscars .. y’all really robbed Audra day and Viola Davis. Y’all must love halle berry that much to keep her in that damn spot. Only one black woman to win best actress ? Y’all really love the Oscar curse towards the leading category." Another fan echoed similar thoughts with, "Big surprises of night: Frances McDormand (Nomadland) takes best actress over favourite Viola Davis (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom); and Anthony Hopkins (The Father) best actor over favourite, late/great Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey's). Still, diversity has never come this far. #Oscars."
