WASHINGTON, DC: Former President Donald Trump is slapped with yet another indictment under federal criminal charges. He is facing four counts, which consist of conspiracy to defraud the US government and obstruct the electoral count for trying to overturn the 2020 election. According to the 45-page indictment issued in the court, Trump was ‘determined to remain in power’ despite ‘having lost.’

The 77-year-old has been summoned before a federal magistrate judge to appear on Thursday in Washington, DC. As per legal documents, six unnamed co-conspirators were also booked. In a televised public statement after the indictment was released, Special Counsel Jack Smith said the attack on Capitol was “fueled by lies” made by Trump “targeted at obstructing the bedrock function of the US government - the nation's process of collecting, counting and certifying the results of the presidential election.” He pledged that his office will conduct a 'speedy' trial.

On what grounds was Donald Trump indicted?

The new legal woes are linked to his alleged attempts to hang on to power despite losing in the 2020 election. This adds to Trump’s 40 federal charges in Florida relating to his handling of government-sensitive documents post leaving office. He is due to stand trial in New York in 2024 over falsifying business documents as he allegedly paid hush money to pornstar Stormy Daniels, reports Daily Mail.

Trump's campaign team released a statement called the indictment another 'witch hunt' and compared the US to Nazi Germany. “[The January 6 indictment is] nothing more than the latest corrupt chapter in the continued pathetic attempt by the Biden Crime Family and their weaponized Department of Justice to interfere with the 2024 Presidential Election in which Trump is the undisputed frontrunner, and leading by substantial margins,” read the statement.

More charges could follow

It further stated, "President Trump has always followed the law and the Constitution with advice from many highly accomplished attorneys. These un-American witch hunts will fail and President Trump will be re-elected to the White House so he can save our country from the abuse, incompetence, and corruption that is running through the veins of our country at levels never seen before."

There could be more charges followed against Trump in Georgia as prosecutors are investigating him and his allies over allegations of election interference in the state.
