'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Ending Explained: Season 2 unlikely, but Ewan McGregor's Jedi knight will always be special
'Obi-Wan Kenobi' may have had a rather peaceful last 15 minutes out of a 48-minute affair, but it rounds up things in the most perfect way possible. Much of the action takes place in the first 20 minutes which reminds us of the Obi we saw in the movies and ends with a journey that connects to the rest of the 'Star Wars' movie that involves McGregor's character.
Starring McGregor who reprised his role as Obi, the miniseries revolves around the aftermath of Anakin Skywalker's turn to the Dark Force and the scar it leaves on his teacher. The series is set halfway between the two trilogies: a decade after 'Revenge of the Sith' and nine years before 'The New Hope'.
'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Episode 6 finale fan review: Emotional chapter gives Star Wars fans all they wanted
'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Ending Explained: Sequel unlikely
Episode 6 begins with Reva (Ingram) in Tatooine as she searches for Owen and Luke Skywalker. Meanwhile, Darth Vader and the Empire are in hot pursuit of Obi-Wan and the rest of the survivors. The latter decides to confront his past and face Vader once and for all and escapes on a drop-ship which the dark lord chases. The duo faces off on a desolate planet and even as the two cross lightsabers, Reva engages Owen and Beru to get to Luke.
All eyes though are on the Jedi knight and his former protege who gets the high ground only to be put in his place. Obi-Wan appears relatively stronger this time around and his suit and helmet take a major chunk of the damage. He takes a felling blow from Obi's lightsaber and that perhaps highlights his vulnerability. The master is shocked when he calls him Anakin only for his friend to say that "this is what remains" of him. It's an emotional sequence that sees Obi realize that his old buddy and family are really gone, and he leaves broken-hearted even as Vader screams for revenge. The scene is called back to his lone self from 'Revenge of the Sith'.
The other storyline sees Reva fail to kill Luke after she chases him in the desert. It reminds her of Anakin's move of attacking her as a youngling. It's a change of heart as she delivers the future Jedi to Owen as Obi consoles her saying her mercy was her biggest strength. A recovered Vader later promises Palpatine that he will indeed destroy everything to get to Obi and even refers to him as 'Master' after being accused of being weakened by his bond with Obi. Leia is shown to have been reunited with her family and she meets Obi who tells her she's the best of her parents.
There is no post-credits scene that signals the end of what has been a wonderful piece of 'Star Wars' content. There's still enough story that the movies tell, but if this was all about Vader vs Obi, then the series nails it by telling an emotional tale in six episodes, all of which are streaming on Disney+.
