NYPD vehicle mows down and kills 52-year-old woman on sidewalk while rushing to respond to a 911 call

QUEENS, NEW YORK CITY: A 52-year-old woman has reportedly died after being struck by a NYPD vehicle as officers hurried through Queens while responding to a 911 call. The horrific crash took place around 8.30 pm on Friday, February 17, when an NYPD Ford Explorer SUV carrying four officers, was responding to a call near Beach Channel Drive and Bay 32nd Street.

The Patrol car, with its lights on, collided with a vehicle on the road and then struck another parked car. The impact was such that the NYPD vehicle veered and crashed into the sidewalk and bike lane, where it struck the victim. The woman, whose identity has been withheld, sustained a severe head injury and was rushed to Jamaica Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to ABC 7.

What led to the horrific car crash?

The four NYPD officers also sustained minor injuries and were taken to South Nassau Hospital. The department confirmed that the individual driving the civilian vehicle was not hurt. Leading up to Friday's crash, police in the SUV had been responding to an emergency call from another cop. Authorities were still investigating the crash as of Sunday, February 19.

A Rockaway resident, who identified himself as Kevin Garcia, reportedly said the victim was a home attendant on her way home from work. "The lady that she was taking care of, her kids came, got a sandwich, because I work as a cook ... She said it was her nurse," Garcia told CBS News, adding "When I saw the impact after, the police got out the car and went to go take care of the woman to give her CPR”.

Friday's crash comes after a 23-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a Seattle police patrol vehicle in South Lake Union. The police department noted that an officer was responding to an urgent “priority one” call with the Seattle Fire Department on January 23 when the woman, identified as Jaahnavi Kandula, was mowed down.

First responding officers found Kandula with life-threatening injuries and performed CPR while waiting for the fire department. When they arrived, she was transported to Harborview Medical, where she was pronounced dead. The King County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death as multiple blunt force injuries, according to Seattle Times. SPD spokesperson Detective Valerie Carson said. that the officer, who has been with the department since November 2019, won’t be working his next shift, but instead will be taking a “release day."
