Release date

After a one-week-only streaming release on December 4, 2020, and a release at select IMAX theater in the United States on January 29, 2021, 'Nomadland' is scheduled to release both in theatres and digitally only on Hulu on February 19, 2021.

The official synopsis of the film is described as: "A woman embarks on a journey through the American West after losing everything during the recession." Based on the 2017 non-fiction book 'Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century' by Jessica Bruder, the film will also feature some real-life nomads such as Linda May, Swankie, Bob Wells and Peter Spears as fictionalized versions of themselves.

Academy Award-winning actress Frances McDormand stars in the role of Fern, the woman who loses it all and goes in the pursuit of happiness by living the nomad life. David Strathairn, who's known for his extensive work in the industry, also plays the role of David in the film coming on Hulu. Also starring will be the aforementioned real life nomads along with Derek Endres as Derek Enders.

With Frances McDormand and Peter Spears (who is also producing) opting the book's film rights in 2017, the decision to approach Zhao happened after watching her 2017 movie 'The Ruler'. When the two met with Zhao at the 33rd Independent Spirit Awards in March 2018, the latter reportedly agreed to write and direct the film that was eventually filmed four months in fall 2018, when the crew and McDormand lived out of vans throughout the period of filmings. Peter Spears, Mollye Asher, Dan Janvey and Zhao produced the film.
