Creator
With Frances McDormand and Peter Spears (who is also producing) opting the book's film rights in 2017, the decision to approach Zhao happened after watching her 2017 movie 'The Ruler'. When the two met with Zhao at the 33rd Independent Spirit Awards in March 2018, the latter reportedly agreed to write and direct the film that was eventually filmed four months in fall 2018, when the crew and McDormand lived out of vans throughout the period of filmings. Peter Spears, Mollye Asher, Dan Janvey and Zhao produced the film.
