The last episode of 'New Amsterdam' found Dr Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) finally putting herself first, as she turned down Max (Ryan Eggold) professionally and Cassian (Daniel Dae Kim) personally to focus on family. Dr Helen's half-brother's death in Iran before she could make it to say goodbye devastated her in earlier episodes. Helen was wracked with guilt that she didn't spend enough time getting to know him when he was alive.

She hopes to now make it up in some small measure by asking her brother's daughter to come and live with her in New York, to offer her a better life. This is a plotline that fans are very keen to see develop. Helen's niece is played by Nadia Affolter who played Sara in the first season of Amazon's 'Jack Ryan' TV series, alongside John Krasinski. Nadia is tri-lingual in English, German and Farsi.

Fans, however, are still a bit puzzled why the brilliant and forever multi-tasking Dr Helen had to give up her promotion and her boyfriend to focus on her niece. One fan tweeted,"Wot I don’t get it....Helen can’t have friends, boyfriend, job, cause her niece is coming to NY....don’t make sense #newamsterdam." Another echoed the sentiment saying, "So Helen gave up her career and her relationship to look after her niece who is 16 (2 yrs away from being an adult)?! She is old enough to not need someone every second of the day. Silly woman. #NewAmsterdam."

Others felt that Helen may just have used her niece as a way to get out of a relationship her heart wasn't really into. One fan tweeted, "Helen, just say you weren't into Shin. Don't be using your niece as an excuse to break up with him. I feel the show could of found a better exit for Shin (like seperate because he doesn't want a baby, jealous of Max/Helen connection, etc. #Sharpwin #NewAmsterdam."

Others can't believe that Max and Helen have drifted apart so much he doesn't even know that Helen lost her brother or that her niece is coming to stay with her. One fan tweeted, "So Max has still no idea about Helen’s brother and niece #NewAmsterdam I’m gonna need them to talk and Max to LISTEN."

To find out what is Max's reaction when he gets to know about Helen's niece and also what kind of a mother figure Helen will turn out to be, tune into new episodes of 'New Amsterdam' on Tuesdays at Tuesdays 10/9c on NBC.
