'Memories of the Alhambra': Writer Song Jae Jung hints at Jin Woo's escape, says breaking rules 'creates an error in the game'

Netflix/tvN K-drama ‘Memories of the Alhambra’ is coming to an end and, with just two more episodes in the pipeline, many questions remain unanswered. One of the most important ones being the fate of the leading man Jin Woo (Hyun Bin).

Jin Woo was last seen escaping the cops who want to put him behind the bars for the murders he did not commit. He disappeared in the nick of time — possibly into the game — after handing Emma (Park Shin-hye) the key.

Even though his girlfriend Hee Joo — who Emma is a mirror image of — tried looking for him, he was nowhere to be found. However, her brother Se Joo (Chenyeol) who she has been searching for all this time has come back. We are yet to learn where the brother was hiding but, at this point, we are fairly certain that Jin Woo traded himself for Se Joo. The details of this switcheroo will hopefully be explained in the upcoming episode 15.

Writer Song Jae Jung recently explained how the show has worked the death glitch into the game and it is giving us some idea as to how Jin Woo will find his exit button. “You can think of it as a virus. Having murderous intent and breaking the rules created an error in the game.

"In Yoo Jin Woo and Cha Hyung Suk’s (Park Hoon) case as well, the murderous fights between the users caused them to become able to feel pain and unable to log out,” Soompi quoted her as saying.

The writer, who had her story edited by a gaming professional, explains how using smart lenses to play AR games leads to the brain being controlled by the game, adding that the speculation regarding Hyung Suk’s death being caused by the lack of blood in his body was written in purely to throw off the viewers.

Jae Jung explains, “That was only a speculation made by the police officer as they couldn’t properly check if it was true. The line was purposely inserted to create a tense atmosphere by implying that Yoo Jin Woo could be involved in the murder case.”

The revelation that the gamer’s brain is being controlled by the game, however, has given us a hint as to how Jin Woo can come back to the real world. So far, Jin Woo and his team have been looking for Se Joo in the game by playing it. They did not know if Se Joo wants to be found or even how to look for him. Now that he is back, he can advise director Park (Lee Seung-joon) how the inside of the game works.

Moreover, unlike Se Joo, who probably wanted to hide after the death of Marco (Lee Jae-wook), Jin Woo wants to return to his life, especially because he has someone to return to. He wants to build a life with Hee Joo and would reach out to the team in any way he can at the earliest. This is after they figure out that, in a way, it is the game that is holding people hostage. Moreover, Jin Woo has built an alliance with Emma and he also has an ally in the game which could work in his favor.

With the prospects that Jae Jung’s revelations open up, we are quite excited to see how ‘Memories of the Alhambra’ will wrap up Jin Woo’s story in the upcoming episodes which will air on January 19 and 20 via tvN and Netflix.
