CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: The legal thriller 'Mea Culpa,' starring Kelly Rowland and Trevante Rhodes, made its Netflix debut on Friday, February 23. The film delivers a nail-biting suspense, culminating in a climax that is truly worth watching.
The film follows the story of Mea Harper (Kelly Rowland), a criminal defense attorney who takes on the controversial case of artist Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes), accused of brutally killing his girlfriend.
Tension builds up as she goes against Ray Hawthrone (Nick Sagar), her brother-in-law and prosecutor of the case while also dealing with the sexual tension with her client.
Mea Harper discovers Hydie is alive
Mea Harper declares her withdrawal from the case as she discerns Zyair Malloy's consistent pattern of seducing women, leading her to believe that he may be responsible for the death of his girlfriend, Hydie.
Ridden with guilt, she confesses to her husband Kal Hawthorne (Sean Sagar) that she slept with Zyair.
As her professional and personal life falls apart, she takes some time off and visits a beach resort in the Dominican Republic. During her solo getaway, she unexpectedly encounters Hydie, who works as a staff at the resort.
Mea attempts to pursue her, but Hydie slips away. She then contacts her brother-in-law and prosecutor, Ray Hawthorne, disclosing that Zyair is innocent. Ray advises Mea to return home, assuring her that he will dispatch one of his investigators to locate Hydie.
Ray Hawthrone framed Zyair Malloy
Upon her arrival at Ray's house, Mea finds his wife Charlise Hawthorne's (Shannon Thornton) portrait made by Zyair. She figures out that Charlise too had an affair with Zyair at some point in time.
Simultaneously, Mea receives an email from Private Detective Jimmy (RonReaco Lee) which reveals that her mother-in-law Azalia Hawthorne (Kerry O'Malley) has been faking her cancer.
Ray confesses to fabricating a cancer story to garner sympathy votes for his mayoral campaign. Mea realizes that it was Ray who framed Zyair in a murder case as retaliation for his affair with Ray's wife.
This also explains why Jimmy couldn't trace any record of Hydie, as she was set as bait for Zyair.
Mea Harper narrowly escapes Ray Hawthrone's attack
To conceal their secrets, Ray orders Charlise to stab Mea. However, she goes against his instructions and attacks him. During a violent altercation, Azalia stabs and kills Charlise.
Mea narrowly escapes and runs from the house. Spotting her husband driving back home, she urgently informs him that Ray tried to kill her. Kal comforts her and quickly calls 911 for assistance.
However, Mea quickly realizes that instead of dialing emergency services, Kal has reached out to Ray, exposing his complicity in their scheme.
Fearing for her safety, Mea takes control of the steering wheel, causing the car to collide with a truck. Kal loses his life in the accident, while Mea manages to survive.
The incident gains national attention, resulting in Ray's arrest while Zyair is acquitted and released. Subsequently, Zyair texts Mea, expressing his wish to meet her again.
