Man shot dead inside Virginia university hospital at midnight, suspect arrested

RICHMOND, VIRGINIA: A tragic report is coming from Virginia Commonwealth University where one person was shot dead inside a hospital. The incident took place early Wednesday morning, May 10, according to the authorities. It was triggered by an altercation between two men. The victim’s body was found inside a stairwell at VCU Medical Center North Hospital, and the suspect shooter was soon located and arrested by the police, as per WTVR.
The authorities told the outlet no one else was involved in the shooting, and no added injuries were reported either. The officials are yet to name both the victim and shooter. VCU Police updated online that a call was received after midnight reporting shots fired and an active threat at the hospital in Richmond. After several hours, the VCU Police in coordination with the Richmond Police Department restored normalcy after taking the suspect into custody. Both will now be investigating the incident, as per update from the officials, according to WTVR.

'Providing counseling resources'
"We're in the process of locating and identifying people who may have witnessed this and providing counseling resources, but obviously it's a very, very traumatic event," said VCU Chief of Police John Venuti. He added that the department will work with hospital staff and "explain to them what happened, explain the level of police response and move forward from there."

The charges in the shooting case will be determined by law enforcement and the district attorney’s office, said Rich Edwards, acting chief of the Richmond Police Department.
'There is a suspect in custody'
"Even though we don't have all the answers, it's important not only for staff and patients here, but the greater community to understand that the situation is no longer an active threat to the community," Edwards said. "There is a suspect in custody, and we will be determining in consultation with the Commonwealth attorney what charges are appropriate at this time."
