HOUSTON, TEXAS: Lydell Grant, a 46-year-old Texas man, who was exonerated in 2019 after serving more than seven years in prison over a 2010 stabbing case, has been accused of fatally shooting another man during a recent road rage incident. Houston Police said that Grant and an unnamed woman were seen leaving a corner store on Thursday, April 6, around 11.50 pm before the man ran a stop sign and ended up getting hit by a Toyota, the Daily Mail reported. Shortly after, Grant allegedly got out of the car and fired multiple shots through the windshield of the Toyota, before returning to his car and driving off the scene.

The Toyota driver, who was identified as 33-year-old Edwin Arevalo, was pronounced dead on the spot. Grant was reportedly arrested with murder charges on Friday, April 7, and is currently being held on a $1 million bond, as per the publication. Investigators said CCTV footage from the road rage incident near the intersection of Hiram Clarke Road and Brentwood Park Drive helped them identify Grant as the suspect in the April 6 shooting.

Who is Lydell Grant?

Lydell Grant is a 46-year-old man from Texas who was recently arrested after being accused of fatally shooting a person during a road rage incident. He previously served over seven years in prison for the 2010 murder of 28-year-old Aaron Scheerhoon but was exonerated after being found innocent. The man was released from prison in 2019 following his 2012 conviction over accusations of stabbing Scheerhoorn outside a Montrose bar. Nearly six eyewitnesses of the stabbing incident identified Grant as the perpetrator and testified against him during the murder trial. The witnesses reportedly claimed that they saw Grant fleeing the 2010 crime scene in the wake of stabbing Scheerhoorn several times after the latter was turned away from the bar, the Daily Mail reported.

However, nearly eight years after Grant’s conviction, the Innocence Project of Texas examined the DNA evidence found on late Scheerhoorn’s fingernails and shared that it did not point toward Grant as the attacker. Authorities then tracked down a man named Jermaico Carter in Atlanta, Georgia, where he confessed to killing Scheerhoorn, the publication noted. Grant was declared innocent by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in May 2021. Meanwhile, Carter pled guilty to Scheerhoorn’s murder last year.

“The highest responsibility of a prosecutor is to see that justice is done and insuring that we have the correct individual charged is a baseline responsibility,” Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said in a statement shared during Grant’s exoneration. In the aftermath of Grant’s latest arrest, his defense argued charges on Grant’s criminal record were last found in 2009. They also mentioned that the man has been running his own home cleaning business for the last six months and is mostly engaged in helping to support his mother, the outlet noted.

‘We stand behind Mr Grant’s previous exoneration’

Following Grant’s arrest, a spokesperson for the Innocence Project of Texas, issued a statement to ABC 13. “'We are saddened by the news of this tragic event and our thoughts and sympathies go out to the victim's family,” said the spokesperson. “As this is an ongoing investigation, we cannot comment on the specifics of this incident,” they added. However, the spokesperson noted, “We stand behind Mr Grant's previous exoneration, which was granted by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.”
