'Little Big Women': Release date, plot, cast, trailer and all you need to know about the Taiwanese movie

On January 7, 2021, the streaming giant Netflix revealed that it would exclusively stream Taiwan’s highest-grossing box office film of 2020 'Little Big Women'. The film first premiered on October 22, 2020, at the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea, and then screened at the Taoyuan Film Festival on October 23, 2020, in Taiwan. It was also shown at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival on November 14, 2020, and is now set to make its global release. Here is all you need to know about the film.

'Little Big Women' will be available globally on February 5, 2021.

Plot

According to Netflix, it's "Based on director Joseph Chen-chieh Hsu’s personal experience, 'Little Big Women' tells the story of how a family grapples with and eventually accepts the fact that their recently deceased grandfather was having an affair, exploring how the grandmother overcomes this grudge and learns to accept the other woman. Diving into how a generation of women free themselves from the confines of traditional family values, the film shines a light on how people experience betrayal and pain and ultimately find reconciliation."

Cast

Shu-Fang Chen

Shu-Fang Chen is known for her works in 'Dear Tenant', 'Taipei Story' (1985) and 'Welcome to the Happy Days' (2015). Her other works include 'Plant Goddess' (2019), 'Green Door' (2019), and 'Wild Sparrow' (2019). Shu-Fang Chen won a Golden Horse Award for Best Leading Actress for 'Little Big Women'. The actress has also been nominated for a Festival Prize twice at the Taipei Film Festival for Best Supporting Actress — once in 2019 for 'Wild Sparrow' and the other in 2020 for 'Dear Tenant'. She was also nominated for an Asian Television Award in 2017 for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Ying-Hsuan Hsieh

Ying-Hsuan Hsieh is known for her roles as Liu Sanlian in 'Dear Ex' (2018), Yu Hsiu-chi in 'Green Door' (2019), and Chen Chia-Ling in 'The Making of an Ordinary Woman' (2019). Her other works include 'Life Plan A and B' (2016), 'A Boy Named Flora A' (2017), 'Love is in the Air' (2018), and 'Plant Goddess' (2018-2019). Ying-Hsuan Hsieh was nominated for a Golden Horse Award for Best Supporting Actress for the 'Little Big Women'. The actress has also won a Festival Prize at the Taipei Film Festival for Best Actress for 'Dear Ex' and a Golden Horse Award for Best Leading Actress in 2018 for the same production. 

Vivian Hsu

Vivian Hsu is known for her roles as Mae in 'One Last Dance' (2006), Ice Harpy in 'The Emperor and the White Snake' (2011), Do Do in 'The Show Fairy' and Xia Xuan in 'Dancing without You' (2010). She has also worked in 'The Tag Along: Devil Fish' (2018), 'The Confidence Man JP: Princess' (2020), and 'Dream Raider' (2020). The actress was nominated for a Festival Prize at the Taipei Film Festival in 2019 for Best Actress for 'The Tag Along: Devil Fish'. She was also nominated for a Golden Lotus Award at the Macau International Movie Festival in 2011 for Best Actress for 'Dancing Without You'. 

Ke-Fang Sun

Ke-Fang Sun is known for her roles as Cheng-Fang Liu in 'Close Your Eyes Before It's Dark' (2016), Lin Chun in 'Mân hàn dà cân - Wûwèi bâ zhên de suìyuè: What She Put on the Table' (2017), Chan Shu-Mei in 'The Coming Through' (2018) and Lee Chiao-Er in 'The Fearless' (2019). Her recent roles include 'The Rope Curse' (2018), 'Plant Goddess' (2018-2019), 'Yong-Jiu Grocery Store' (2019), 'I, Myself' (2020), and 'Adventure of the Ring' (2020). The actress won a Golden Bell Award in 2017 for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Television Series for 'Close Your Eyes Before It's Dark' (2016). 

The rest of the cast includes Han Chang, Janine Chun-Ning Chang, Ning Ding, Buffy Chen, Honduras, Shao-hua Lung, Weber Yang, Sara Yu and many more.

Creators

The movie is directed by Joseph Chen-Chieh Hsu, who also has writing credits along with Maya Huang. Tiffany Yu-Chia Chen, Willy Liao, and Jacqueline W. Liu serve as producers. Yuyu Yang serves as co-producer and Vivian Hsu, and Ching-Sung Liao serves as executive producers. Joseph Chen-Chieh Hsu was nominated for a Golden Horse Award for Best New Director and Maya Huang Joseph and Chen-Chieh Hsu were also nominated for the same award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
