LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY: A frantic search for an inmate who escaped from custody is currently underway in Kentucky. Authorities are trying to locate Kyle Aaron Skaggs who is considered "armed and dangerous," and is on the run, according to the Fleming County Sheriff who has warned the locals.

In the announcement made by the sheriff's office on Facebook, authorities said that before the incarceration, the inmate lived in Flemingsburg and has now broken out of custody in Lexington. On Monday, May 8, Skaggs apparently left the Hope Center, a shelter and community services organization where he was at a home incarceration program, reported CBS affiliate WKYT, citing the Kentucky Department of Corrections.

Police seek help from public for information about Skaggs

In the statement shared by the sheriff's office, they have not disclosed the charges against Skaggs before his escape or any other information about the circumstances that led to his incarceration. The Kentucky State Police and Fleming County Sheriff have asked that anyone with details in connection to Skagg's whereabouts contact either the state police at 606-784-4127 or the Fleming County Dispatch at 606-845-2121 or state police.

Series of prison breaks in recent weeks

Before Skagg's escape from custody, a series of prison breaks took place in recent weeks in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Mississippi. Four inmates in Jackson escaped from the Raymond Detention Center in April 2023. Casey Grayson, Dylan Arrington, Corey Harrison, and Jerry Raynes made their escape with the help of an acquaintance who now faces aiding and abetting charges. While Grayson and Arrington were each found dead, Harrison was caught earlier this month, in May, after an extensive search across several states, reported CBS News.

Recently, two inmates Ameen Hurst and Nasir Grant escaped after they cut a hole in a fence surrounding the Philadelphia detention center in Philadelphia. According to police, even after 18 hours of the inmate's escape, they did not learn of the prison break until Monday afternoon, May 8.

On April 30, two inmates Alder Marin-Sotelo and Bruce Callahan ran away from a jail in Virginia. Marin-Sotelo who faces charges in the murder of a North Carolina sheriff's deputy in 2022 was taken into custody from Mexico on May 4 and Callahan who was held on the counts of federal drug and weapons charges was caught on a college campus on Monday, May 8 in Virginia.
