'The Matrix' star Keanu Reeves' small screen stint was short-lived after reports emerged that he was no longer part of Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio's 'Devil in the White City' series at Hulu. The reason for his departure wasn't revealed at the time of writing, but fans on Twitter were left wondering if he chose an MCU project instead. Two months ago, news of Reeves being part of the TV series was announced, but now, it appears that the streamer is looking for replacements. The role of architect and urban planner Daniel H Burnham would have been his first TV role.

While there were no comments by Hulu or Reeves' representatives, the fans on Twitter had their own theories as to why the 58-year-old may have exited the much-acclaimed series. Based on Erik Larsen's 2003 book of the same name, the Hulu series tells the story of Dr HH Holmes — a con artist and a serial killer who was known for creating the 'Murder Castle'. There has been no casting announcement for Holmes yet.

"Please say he dropped it to play Ghost Rider," one of the tweets read. "Damn. scorsese fumbled an act like keanu? wow," a fan remarked. "Only Keanu will say "no" to Scorsese and Lenardo," a comment said. The conversation reeled back to Reeves playing Ghost Rider. "Gotta make sure he has time to be ghost ride," a fan wrote. This comes in the wake of the actor telling Jimmy Kimmel on his show that he was actually right for the role. "Ghostrider or something big came up," a tweet said. One of the fans wanted Christian Bale to replace Reeves in the TV series. "May i suggest a replacement?" a tweet read with a GIF of Bale's Patrick Bateman from 'American Psycho'.

Per Deadline, "The Devil in the White City tells the true story of two men, an architect and a serial killer, whose fates were forever linked by The Chicago World’s Fair of 1893. It follows Daniel H. Burnham, a brilliant and fastidious architect racing to make his mark on the world, and Henry H. Holmes, a handsome and cunning doctor who fashioned his own pharmaceutical “Murder Castle” on fairgrounds – a palace built to seduce, torture, and mutilate young women. The story takes the viewer on a tour of murder, romance, and mystery in the gilded age."
