UPDATED JUL 10, 2019

Judy Garland is one of the most iconic celebrities of all time, best known for her portrayal of Dorothy Gale in the 1939 film ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ Over the years, she has been portrayed and fictionalized in many television and stage shows. Now, in what seems like the biggest biographical project about Garland’s life, BBC Films is coming out with a film this year.

Inspired by the Tony-nominated West End and Broadway play ‘End of the Rainbow’ by Peter Quilter, the story of ‘Judy’ is set in 1969, when Garland arrives in London for a five-week run of sell-out concerts.

Release date

The movie is set to release in the United States on September 27, 2019, and in the United Kingdom on October 4, 2019.

Plot

‘Judy’ will narrate the story of Garland’s life during her stay in London, wherein she spent her time with young new fiancé Mickey Deans and loyal friend and pianist Anthony. She was preparing for her five-week run of shows at The Talk of the Town, which she was not all that excited to do.

She, however, stays on to perform the act so as to maintain her star status, which had been deteriorating due to some bad press shortly before that. However, the going gets tougher because of her struggles with drug addiction, staying away from her children and of course, the men who are causing problems in her life.

Cast

Academy and Golden Globe Awards winning actress Renée Zellweger will portray Garland in the movie, whereas Darci Shaw portrays a young version of her. From the trailer alone, it is evident that she is going to be an award show favorite in the upcoming cycle.

Other prominent cast members in the movie include Rufus Sewell as Sidney Luft, Michael Gambon as Bernard Delfont, and Finn Wittrock as Mickey Deans. Gemma-Leah Devereux’s Liza Minnelli is also another character to look out for.

Director/Writer

Rupert Goold, who is among the recipients of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, is an English theatre director. Having worked as the artistic director of the Royal and Derngate Theatres in Northampton, Goold has directed many plays and worked with many veteran actors, including Sir Patrick Stewart.

Trailer

A trailer for 'Judy' was released on July 8, and it showed the fading stardom of Garland, even as she struggled with depression.
