'Spartacus: House of Ashur' creator reveals how new spin-off rewrites the gladiator's legacy: 'He just...'
'Spartacus: House of Ashur' creator Steven S. DeKnight has revealed what the fans can expect from the new historical drama. Recently, IGN organised a special screening for the first two episodes of 'Spartacus: House of Ashur' in Los Angeles before its premiere on Starz on December 5, 2025. At the screening, DeKnight was also joined by Nick E. Tarabay, who plays the titular role of Ashur in the show. Following the screening, the duo participated in a fun Q&A session, where they discussed the forthcoming series in detail. For the unversed, 'Spartacus: House of Ashur' is a show that follows Ashur in an alternate timeline where he wasn't killed on Mount Vesuvius during the events of Spartacus.
The original series 'Spartacus' premiered on Starz in January 2010 and concluded in April 2013. Now, DeKnight and Tarabay have reunited for this project after nearly 12 years. Speaking of Ashur's character and his latest collaboration with Tarabay, DeKnight explained, "The Ashur's character, to me, is so intriguing. Here's a guy, when he first got to the ludus as a gladiator, he just wanted to be a part of the brotherhood. I always say if Ashur had gotten a hug back then, he would've been a different person. But he was mocked and ridiculed and humiliated, and it turned him bitter. So I love the idea of taking this man and giving him a chance to be a better person. Or will his demons keep dragging him down?"
Soon after, Tarabay mentioned that the show's story will be narrated from Ashur's perspective. In addition to this, Tarabay stated that viewers will get to see different sides of his character that they haven't seen before. "In this season, you'll see a softer side of Ashur. A loving side, a kind of vulnerable side to Ashur. And because of this, because of his feelings now, he'll do things that he would do. And that's all I can say about that," Tarabay shared.
As per ScreenRant, the official 'Spartacus: House of Ashur' synopsis describes the series as "a thrilling, erotic, history-bending, roller-coaster experience that builds on everything that made the original series a colossal hit." "No longer a slave, Ashur has clawed his way to power, owning the same ludus that once owned him. But ruling a band of merciless gladiators is child's play compared to surviving the savage world of Roman politics — a cutthroat game in which betrayal isn’t a sin, it’s currency. He flips tradition on its head by unleashing Achillia, a fierce and powerful gladiatrix eager to prove herself worthy in a man’s world. Together, they ignite a new kind of spectacle that shocks, disrupts, and offends the elite with every drop of blood," the synopsis adds.
Along with Tarabay, the show also stars Graham McTavish, Tenika Davis, Jordi Webber, Jamaica Vaughan, Jaime Slater, Simon Arblaster, Ivana Baquero, Claudia Black, Evander Brown, Duane Wichman Evans, Jackson Gallagher, Arlo Gibson, Leigh Gill, Dan Hamill, Louis Hunter, Andrew McFarlane, Cameron Rhodes, Donald Ross, India Shaw-Smith, and Graham Vincent. 'Spartacus: House of Ashur' is scheduled to premiere with the first two episodes on December 5, on Starz.
