'Power: Origins' sets massive franchise record ahead of premiere
'Power: Origins' has already made waves well ahead of its premiere. The upcoming spinoff of Starz's hit crime drama franchise, 'Power', is a prequel starring Spence Moore as young James "Ghost" St. Patrick and Charlie Mann as a young Tommy Egan.
The series continues to remain in production, but has set a record already for its mammoth episode count. Unlike previous episodes, which have 10 episodes each, the prequel will see 18 episodes in season 1. The latest announcement comes after the series added six recurring stars with filming underway in New Jersey.
Latest faces include Jason Dirden (Power Book III: Raising Kanan) as Traymond Stinson, Jennifer Ferrin (The Blacklist) as Tommy's mother, Kate Egan, Lizzy DeClement as nurse Jill Wexler, Lenny Platt as Lenny Seidel, Armani Gabriel as J-Boogs, and Everett Osborne as pro football player Omay Moreau.
Per ScreenRant, the show's theme and tone will be different, and per the network has been described as "a fun, rambunctious exploration of a new time period in the Power franchise” that will explore "the unbridled audacity of young men on the rise, determined to become legends in the game."
The original 'Power' series, starring Omari Hardwick as Ghost and Joseph Sikora as Tommy, premiered in 2014. The crime drama ran for six seasons and later spawned spin-offs — 'Power Book II: Ghost', 'Power Book III: Raising Kanan', and 'Power Book IV: Force'. The success of these shows saw Starz greenlight a new series with an 18-episode order. This shows the network's confidence in 'Origins'. Meanwhile, 'Power: Legacy' is another series in development and is set in the franchise's present-day timeline after the events of 'Force. It stars Hardwick and Sikora as Ghost and Tommy.
Earlier, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson shared an update on 'Legacy's production. "[Power: Legacy] is already shooting in New York, and it will have 18 episodes. It’s like two seasons instead of the way we did it last time. So that’s gonna be cool. It’s exciting," Jackson told Deadline. Only time will tell whether 'Origins' will join the other 'Power' shows as a successful addition.
