Is ‘Brilliant Minds’ canceled? Here’s what we know as NBC show's Season 2 sees a sharp drop in ratings
Things are not looking good for NBC's medical drama 'Brilliant Minds.' Initially, the lackluster performance of the sophomore season was compared to the relatively successful debut season. Now, as the show's second-season ratings continue to decline, NBC has pulled 'Brilliant Minds' off the air, without announcing an official return date. While the move may have been motivated by other factors, such as the Winter Olympics, several sections of the audience are interpreting the sequence of events as an early indication of the show's potential cancellation. An official statement from NBC, however, is yet to be made in this regard.
It is a known fact that NBC had previously put a significant number of its shows on hold during the 2026 edition of the Winter Olympics. Hence, fans expected the show to resume original programming after the event came to a close on February 22, 2026. However, it will be a while before the remaining six episodes of 'Brilliant Minds' season 2 hit the screens. One can speculate that the rest of the medical drama's sophomore season might be back as late as the Spring or even the Summer. One must remember that NBC hasn't officially canceled the show, but its falling ratings aren't helping ensure that audiences get to watch the remaining six episodes.
According to Nielsen Live+7 figures, the debut season finale of 'Brilliant Minds' received a 0.32 rating and was able to draw in 4.2 million viewers. That marked the peak of the season's popularity, and things have gone downhill ever since. The second season premiere received a 0.28 rating among adults aged 18 to 49, and drew 3.67 million total viewers. Things soon deteriorated, and by January 12, 2026, the show had further dropped to a 0.19 rating with 2.6 million viewers. These numbers are solely derived from NBC's television network and do not take into account the show's performance on the streaming platform Peacock.
Speculating about the potential cancellation of the NBC medical drama, the r/Brilliant_Minds_NBC sub-Reddit has been abuzz. One user commented, "Very disappointed to hear about this. If it doesn't get renewed for another season, I hope at least they will air the remaining episodes for the season, and it ends without a Cliffhanger." Another user wrote, "What?! No!! I mean this season is all over the place and has nothing to do with season 1, but still… I love the actors, I love that it’s queer… Can we still hope for a real end?" 'Brilliant Minds' stars Zachary Quinto, Ashleigh LaThrop, Tamberla Perry, and Alex MacNicoll, among others. The show is set against the backdrop of the Bronx General Hospital and chronicles a group of doctors and interns treating patients with psychological and neurological conditions.
