'Into the Dark: School Spirit': Release date, plot, cast, trailer, and everything you need to know about the 'back to school' horror

What could go wrong? Well, everything, when your school's mascot gets haunted by the spirit of a dead teacher!
PUBLISHED JUL 29, 2019

Hulu's anthology horror 'Into the Dark' is returning with a fresh installment, but using the same old signature strategy of spinning a festival that signifies the month, with a horrifying and satirical twist. The fact that August doesn't have a significant festival to be the core of the episode didn't stop Blumhouse from weaving yet another classic story, as they dive deep into pop culture and bless us with a revamped, scary version of 'The Breakfast Club.' Kind of like a 'back to school' themed plot in honor of the first day, it shows a bunch of school students serving detention to find their inner titular 'School Spirit' through unique bonds and how they connect with each other. What could go wrong? Well, everything, when your school's mascot gets haunted by the spirit of a dead teacher! Want to find out more? Here's all you need to know about the upcoming installment of the show!

Release date:

'Into the Dark: School Spirit' releases on Friday, August 2.

The haunted mascot which is the element of horror in 'School Spirit'. (Hulu)

Plot:

The official synopsis describes the upcoming ninth episode as "A group of social outcasts who are stuck in weekend detention are confronted by the school’s legendary hauntings." The five students aren't exactly friends and wouldn't speak to each other if it weren't for the detention they are sharing. So far very 'The Breakfast Club' but the twist in the tale is that they start getting high and sharing legends and lores about a school teacher's spirit haunting the building after she died from a heart attack in the premises, from a student prank gone wrong. The spirit-slash-ghost manifests in the form of the school mascot, and as these kids find mutual interests in each other, a gory bloodbath for survival ensues.

Creator:

Produced by Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions that has gifted horror fans with the 'Paranormal Activity', 'The Purge' franchise and 'Culture Shock', 'Into the Dark' comes from director Mike Gan. The story is written by Patrick Casey and Josh Miller, with Gan co-writing the teleplay.

Cast:

Annie Q and Corey Fogelmanis in 'School Spirit'. (Hulu)

Hugo Armstrong stars as the menacing principal of the high school where all the events of horror unfold on one Saturday gone awfully wrong. Jessi Case, Corey Fogelmanis, Philip Labes, Annie Q., Jordan Austin Smith, Graham Taylor, Rickey Alexander Wilson, and Julian Works, all star as the students in detention.

Trailer:

The first trailer for the back to school horror arrived on July 26 and painted the exact kind of bloody, gory horror that one would expect from Blumhouse. The trailer takes us through tthe principal's antics and the students' in general hostility towards the school's decorum until they are fronted with the life or death situation and all hell breaks loose.
