'House of the Dragon' Season 2: Why Daemon and Aemond are more similar than they think
Contains spoilers for 'House of the Dragon'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'House of the Dragon' Season 2 Episode 4 aired on HBO on July 7, 2024. The exciting episode was a mixture of a high-octane battle sequence and the trademark supernatural elements that make 'House of the Dragon' one of the most followed shows on the planet.
Two characters who were at the center of the narrative were Daemon Targaryen ( Matt Smith) and Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell). While Aemond and his dragon Vhagar were fighting hard in the Battle at Rook's Rest, Daemon had his own struggles at Harrenhal where he couldn't seem to get over his hallucinations.
In one of his hallucinations, he sees himself dressed as Aemond with the trademark eye patch. Viewers who have followed the show religiously and kept a tab on the character arcs have found many similarities between Daemon and Aemond.
How are Daemon and Aemond similar to each other in 'House of the Dragon'
The similarities between the two characters begin with their names made up of the same letters. According to most people, the two characters are more worthy of being Kings than their brothers.
Daemon is more decisive and despite his unpredictability, people argue that he would have made a better ruler than Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine). People seem to think the same about Aemond and his brother Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney) who is indecisive and probably unfit for the throne.
Both Aemond and Daemon are skilled warriors and perhaps the mainstays of their factions. They are also temperamental and unpredictable, often committing acts they later regret. However, neither lets regret get the better of them.
Aemond and Daemon ride the two most vicious dragons of the Seven Kingdoms. Aemond rides the biggest dragon Vhagar while Daemon's dragon Caraxes is considered to be aggressive and swift in the air.
An emerging element in both characters is their loneliness. Being different, they struggle to fit in and find peace only in solitude, which isolates them from their families.
What happens to Aemond and Daemon in 'House of the Dragon'?
As per 'Fire and Blood', Aemond Targaryen will rule as the Prince Regent in the absence of the King and will head to Harrenhal along with Criston Cole (Fabian Frankel) to take the region back from Daemon.
Daemon on the other hand will help Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) claim the throne at King's Landing. Once King's Landing falls, both Daemon and Aemond will be on an ultimate collision course at Harrenhal.
Daemon challenges Aemond to a duel at Harrenhal, leading to a fierce battle above the Gods Eye near the fortress. The conflict culminates tragically as both combatants and their dragons, Caraxes and Vhagar, perish in the intense confrontation.
