Contains spoilers and speculations for 'House of the Dragon'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'House of the Dragon' Season 2 Episode 6 aired on HBO on July 21, 2024. The enthralling episode featured many moments that have got the audiences talking but a subplot that has captured everyone's attention is the spookily engaging story of Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) in Harrenhall.
The rogue prince has been struggling to capture the Riverlands with House Blackwood and House Bracken unwilling to solve their age-old conflict. To add to his woes, his mental demons have surfaced in the haunted castle of Harrenhall and they are making it difficult for him to find any peace to concentrate on the task at hand.
Towards the end of the episode though, he seems to have found a piece of news that might offer him an escape route from the haunted castle and one that could take him or his wife Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) closer to the Iron Throne.
Lord Grover Tully's death offers Daemon a chance to capture Riverlands
In Episode 6, Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin) points out the importance of Lord Grover Tully, the Lord of Riverlands, and how he holds the key to the combative Riverlands.
Lord Grover Tully has not featured in the show but has been mentioned as old and sick. Daemon asks his grandson Oscar Tully (Archie Barnes) to kill his grandfather and take over but Oscar refuses.
Daemon who has been struggling with his hallucinations confides in Alys and she has a solution for him. While it isn't directly shown or mentioned, it is implied that Alys Rivers had a hand in the death of Grover Tully.
Now that Grover is out of the way, it clears the path for Daemon to take over the Riverlands as Oscar seems to be aligned with the Blacks.
Does Daemon take over the Riverlands in 'House of the Dragon'?
As per the source material, 'Fire and Blood', Daemon leads the conquest of Stonehedge which is the home of the Green-aligned House Bracken thus taking control over the Riverlands.
This will prove to be a turning point in the battle between Greens and Blacks as it will prompt Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) and Criston Cole (Fabian Frankel) to go to Riverlands and take Harrenhall from Daemon.
It turns out that this will be their biggest mistake as Aemond will find the castle abandoned with Daemon already at King's Landing with his dragon Caraxes. He will help his wife Rhaenyra take over King's Landing and assert her rule in the capital.
Daemon and Aemond will eventually clash though in Harrenhall at the Battle Above the Gods Eye where both of them will die along with their fierce dragons Caraxes and Vhagar. The battle will be one of the most epic battles in the show.
